The 27 squadron most likely came from the 28, with the sides cut down below the bump out under the rub rail. Cutting the sides down reduced the length to exactly 27’. Then the outer strakes were basically doubled in size. Helps with the cruise speed, is no help with the top speed, and gives a little bit rougher ride. I have looked closely at the 24 squadron, serial number 001 here in Md, and it looks to have come from the 24 cigarette, with the same thing being done – the sides being cut down, but on the 24 squadron the bump out below the rub rail is still there, just shorter than reg cig 24’s (including the Firefox). The deck interior and outer strakes are exactly the same on the 24 as they are on the 27, so much so that the boat on the cover of the 24 brochure was actually a 27
