"The Cigarette"
 

Can anyone tell me (Tres, Craig, Ralph) where or what happened to Don Aronows' ORIGINAL "The Cigarette?" You know, the actual boat that started it all? Is it in a museum, junk yard, bottom of the ocean? Does anyone know? I've asked Philly and even asked the late Ron Doller years ago. No one seems to know.

It was a Cigarette 36 go to www.thunderboatalley.com and you can see it.

I don't know where the original Cigarette is, but I have Aronow's original 1967 "Maltese Magnum". Look under the Magnum forum under "My Old Raceboat"
As far as Seahawks question, "What boat started it all?", Most people would say the 32' Cary called "Cigarette".

My understanding is that the first Cigarette of Arronow's was a Cary hull.

I'm not terribly concened with what Don actually called the hull of "The Cigarette," just where it might be. It may have been a Magnum or Formula, or even a Donzi. It did have the Cigarette Racing Teams' logos on the back though. I just mean the Midnight blue open cockpit 3 man named "The Cigarette." Weve all seen it in the pictures.

'The Cigarette' was a 32' pulled from a Cary mold that Elton Cary built.

No guess as to where it is though.

According to 'The King of Thunderboat Row'... it was a 32' Cary hull that Don had designed.
Because he had a non-compete clause with Magnum, which he had sold, he designed and built boats under his friend, Elton Cary's name.

Whats kind of strange is, in that section of the book, there is a picture of 'The Cigarette' and it has a big bold 'Magnum' decal right above 'The Cigarette Racing Team' Decal

I think it was probably a combination. I think it would be great to find it, and restore it.

I read in the book Searace, back in 1972 "The Cigarette" had been shipped to Austrailia. Don had sold the boat to Val Carr, who at the time was Austrailia`s most famous ocean racer. Carr was a two-time national champion and at the time considered the father of the sport in his country.

According to the book,on March 26, 1972, Val and his brother Paul were killed during the "Schwepps 80" offshore race in Sydney, Austrailia. Val was a father of six young children under nine years. Paul left eight children from infants to 17.

The boat was later sold to auto dealer Arnold Glass, of Sydney. He had won the same race in it the following year and won five other races and the 1973 Austrailian championship.

The only other mention of the boat in this book was in 1976 it was now owned by another Austrailian, Norm Jenkin. It had placed third in the race mentined.

Who knows where it is today?
