"The Cigarette"
Can anyone tell me (Tres, Craig, Ralph) where or what happened to Don Aronows' ORIGINAL "The Cigarette?" You know, the actual boat that started it all? Is it in a museum, junk yard, bottom of the ocean? Does anyone know? I've asked Philly and even asked the late Ron Doller years ago. No one seems to know.
|
what i would like to know is the make amd model of the boat that started it all
|
It was a Cigarette 36 go to www.thunderboatalley.com and you can see it.
|
I don't know where the original Cigarette is, but I have Aronow's original 1967 "Maltese Magnum". Look under the Magnum forum under "My Old Raceboat"
As far as Seahawks question, "What boat started it all?", Most people would say the 32' Cary called "Cigarette". |
My understanding is that the first Cigarette of Arronow's was a Cary hull.
|
Awesome magnum!
I'm not terribly concened with what Don actually called the hull of "The Cigarette," just where it might be. It may have been a Magnum or Formula, or even a Donzi. It did have the Cigarette Racing Teams' logos on the back though. I just mean the Midnight blue open cockpit 3 man named "The Cigarette." Weve all seen it in the pictures. |
'The Cigarette' was a 32' pulled from a Cary mold that Elton Cary built.
No guess as to where it is though. Barry |
According to 'The King of Thunderboat Row'... it was a 32' Cary hull that Don had designed.
Because he had a non-compete clause with Magnum, which he had sold, he designed and built boats under his friend, Elton Cary's name. Whats kind of strange is, in that section of the book, there is a picture of 'The Cigarette' and it has a big bold 'Magnum' decal right above 'The Cigarette Racing Team' Decal Any thoughts? |
I think it was probably a combination. I think it would be great to find it, and restore it.

I read in the book Searace, back in 1972 "The Cigarette" had been shipped to Austrailia. Don had sold the boat to Val Carr, who at the time was Austrailia`s most famous ocean racer. Carr was a two-time national champion and at the time considered the father of the sport in his country.
According to the book,on March 26, 1972, Val and his brother Paul were killed during the "Schwepps 80" offshore race in Sydney, Austrailia. Val was a father of six young children under nine years. Paul left eight children from infants to 17. The boat was later sold to auto dealer Arnold Glass, of Sydney. He had won the same race in it the following year and won five other races and the 1973 Austrailian championship. The only other mention of the boat in this book was in 1976 it was now owned by another Austrailian, Norm Jenkin. It had placed third in the race mentined. Who knows where it is today? Kurt. |
That is excellent info Biggus. Thanks!
|
Was there more than one?
I've seen several variations in different pictures now. And I read that Don had a Cary hull or two in the states and one in Europe? |
I thought i`d dig this up
|
No No No!!! it was Professor Plume in the library with the alignment tool.
|
And lets not forget that the first Apache was in fact.......an Aronow hull..........your welcome....

Great question Cigracer:cool: I have too wondered about the whereabouts of "The Cigarette"
there was a post a long time ago on here (cant remember any details) but someone said that it was stored in a barn somewhere....... one of those posts where someone hints that they know something but wont spill the beans:rolleyes: I popped the question to Bud Lorrow (sp) at Cigarette about the origonal coming from a Cary mold and his response was "no it was a Cig" "Cary came after Cig" |

Jack - So true! Even though it had "Apache" all down the side, it had a round Squadron sticker on the aft sides! Which amuses me when the Apache 'experts' say Don Aronow had nothing to do with Apache. Don was involved in the first one, Jerry Kilpatrick's boat "Apache" , AND Benny's '41 Warpath.

Re: "The Cigarette"
Wait a dang minute! The boat was a 32' Cary. The plug was built by Nick Chapman at Hydroglas Corp., in Hialeah, Fl., 1969, to a Harry Schoell design (a very slight mod of the highly successful full height 28' Magnum). Nick cut the chines on my band saw at Nova Marine.
"The Cigarette" was also the name of Don's #16 Formula 233 that he raced in the 1963 Miami-Key West race. My 233 was named after another rumrunner, "The Hijacker", #69. Don had so many non-competes (which he didn't give a s**t about) that in the end, he would have needed taller boats to list all the names. |

The First Cigarette "the Cigarette" Was Out Of A 32 Cary Hull And It Was Named "the Cigarette" In Respect To A Friend Of Don. If Your Lucky To Find The Book "searace" I Would Get It. We Have Had Ours For Over 12 Yrs And Back Then It Was 69.95. What Ever It Cost Now It Would Be Worth It Cause That Is The Encyclopedia Of Offshore Racing

Type in any search engine.... John Crouse Searace .....and it will come up with Johns website. You can buy a copy directly from him and also get info on the new book he is writing which has even more inside stories of the sport. There is another thread going on now with this same subject in general discussion with a lot of information, I think it is on page three or so. |
