Info | Help ....1973 Cigarette 36...

Hi. I was thinking if anybody has got any info on the cigarette 36 Wide Body, years 1972 - 1973. Just purchased a boat in very poor condition and need a little advice...Will post pics soon...
The documents that went with the boat says lenght over all 10.90 mt, beam 2.90 mt, year 1973, Builder Cigarette Racing Team USA.

I think it is a Cigarette 36 , in Italy there aren't a lot of these boats and so it is not easy for me to restore it.

It seems the boat had twin 260 hp mercuisers staggered but someone cut the deck to make a more spacious cabin and put the two motors side by side. Boat had TRS, one had been stolen. Trim tabs are very heavy Kiekhafer with two pistons.
Now i am taking out all the wood that they used to construct the "new" deck and it seems that the old boat is still there..

Any info will help, Thanks

Re: Info | Help ....1973 Cigarette 36...

ur right that is msot definately a 36 widebody. i dont knwo a lot about those boats, but im sure its an awesome rough water boat wiht it being that wide. Id definately change the configuration bakc to how it was. Are you sure the 260s were staggered? You are probably not going to be happy wiht 260s in a boat that big wiht that wide of a beam. You woudl prob be better off getting some N/A 502s wiht good exhaust(around 450-500 horsepower each), and youd ahve a reliable 60 mph boat. Im guessing you wouldnt want to have some really high output blown 260s, because not a lot of places would be able ot work on them aorudn there. Hope that helps. If you need anymore pics i can post some.

Re: Info | Help ....1973 Cigarette 36...

I always thought that Cig didn't make a 36 wide body until the late seventies - early eighties. The only 36 in 73/74 range was the Awesome.

I could very well be wrong though.

Staggered 260's.....  Wouldn't guess from the factory like that.

Here's the only pictures I can find quickly...

It sounds like you are the lucky owner of a former 36 Cigarette race boat...like the kind Dr. Bob Magoon raced and won the Championship in '73. I am thinking this because you said it was formerly a staggered boat that was converted. Not many boats were built in '73 with a staggered setup unless they were race boats. The hull id numbers on the transon should tell you which 36 it is too. If you do a search in the "General Boating Discussion" look for a thread called "Back in the days" - there are more 36 Cigarettes in there that I posted...

Show us some pictures of your boat...would love to see it.

the hull may very well be a cigarette hull or knockoff of the the 36...check the HIN; is should start with CRT. If it is, that's the good news...the bad news, is that the deck is definitely NOT Cigarette...possibly an add-on to give more headroom, etc, but definitely not from the Cigarette factory.

You have to provide us with the numbers on the transom of the boat. As a previous post stated before if they begin with CRT that is a good sign.

Once we have the numbers, we might be able to piece it together. Check inside for bulkhead placement and count how many there are or were originally from bow to stern.

Sorry to say that we know of one race boat in Europe that was "splashed". Your boat could be one of the copies. The only way we can know for sure is for you to get the numbers.

The 36 was the original 32 foot Cary stretched. These boats were made from '70 to mid 70's when they were stretched again and made into the 40's.

The name Awesome was used later in the 70's on a 35 foot boat that had a raised deck vs the mistress which was a 35 with a flat deck.

Re: Info | Help ....1973 Cigarette 36...

The beam should be 9'3" for a Cigarette 36. Compare the shape to the "Black Tornado" http://albaco.net/tornado/inpg02.html but only the one with the small-circle around the number 4.

Who knows... you're in Italy, maybe you've got that boat??

Mine's in the USA, a 1978. Side-by-side big blocks, full cabin, TRS drives, BW trans, 600+ hp each but top speed is only 66mph gps on salt water. Very strong and stable in big water though.

that's more like it... :) you know...i must have missed in your first post where you mentinoned the add-on...sorry to sound like a know-it-all. looks like you may have an old race boat...pretty cool!

Searace by John Crouse and Michael Aronow's book, Don Aronow, King of Thunderboat Row might help you with your restoration...

any idea what the original gel coat color was?

Good thread, reads like a mystry. Stay tuned find out what they find behind the vault door :D How cool would that be to get a wreck for cheep and find a race boat with history. Do a good job restoring her MF. Too few left to loss any more.

Is the deck glassed to the hull and are there big "X" type cross members in between the stringers in the engine compartment? And does it have several fuel tanks and or a ballast tank?

This is a great thread - it does read like a mystery...

Here's 2 pics. - the first is of a 36 next to a 35 Mistress in Miami circa mid-70's. I think this is the "BAM" boat (www.bammarine.com) formerly one of the KAM's raced by Magoon in the 70's and then converted for pleasure use?? Anyway it shows a great shot of a finished cockpit on the 36 for your reference. Check out BAM marine's website for more 36 pics.

The next picture is one of those Euro "splashed" 36's that my father (Charlie McCarthy - Top Banana) was talking about in the earlier post. From your pics, it looks like your dash is true Cigarette and not the splash. I also think I have some old Cigarette factory pictures that my dad took in the 70's when he was learning how to make boats from Don - I think there are some 36's under construction in those that you may find helpful.

Good luck - you'll have an awesome boat with history when you are done...maybe you do have a famous race boat?? My dad and I own Rocky Aoki's old 1974 35' Cigarette "Benihana" (also Hal Sahlman's "Spirit" previously) and are restoring it too. These boats were really built well back in the day...would love to see more of these restored!

OK, finally stripped and sanded one side here is one pic.
Will post others as long as i have time to resize them....
By the way original gelcoat is white (quite of) and the boat was all painted in black.
Original 1972 builted, no numbers on transom.
Will see when i sand the transom if the numbers may be erased (but i think not, the gelcoat seems original).
Deck is screwed and glassed from the inside with two or three layers of mat.

Marco:

Looks like you are doing a great job so far!! It's a lot of hard work but it'll be worth it when finished.

Very interesting pictures - looks like someone butchered up the bulkheads to make room for a cabin somewhere along the way. I am going to dig through some old pictures to see if I've got a stringer layout pic for the 36' - something doesn't look right to me in that photo - can you post a few more / different angles?

Now that we know it was originally white gelcoat then perhaps that will narrow the field down a bit. Check along the sides toward the front under where the rub-rail should be for etched numbers too...although I don't think they numbered them that early on it might be worth a shot...

Anything else look unusual on it? Can you see any traces of a number or name on the sides in early morning dew?? I know on my boat I can just make out the old name I had on it in the early am...

Here's a couple more 36's. Maybe your boat is the old "Dry Martini" 36' as there was a 36 & 35 raced by Dr. Bonomi...??

Damn, that was alot of effort someone put out just to create that monstrosity. If it turns out to actually be a Cigarette, it's one hell of story. Talk about bringing one back from the brink..................

Re: Info | Help ....1973 Cigarette 36...

That Cig.36' was one of two the former Fino of Rautbord.
Exactly that raced in Europe in 1972,winning three races and helping the World Title.
Then this yellow striped was sold to Bonomi that raced in Key West iin novenber 1972 renamed "Red Venceange".
In 1973 Bonomi recalled it "Dry Martini-Red" and distinguished by the coluors with the famous white "Dry Martini".
In 1974 was sold and trasformed for fast cruising in the aspect that we can see in the first pictures posted by MF.
In 1976 named "Kangol" raced the Viareggio-Bastia-Viareggio with the rookie Guido Niccolai.
I write that because I worked in this boat when was trasformed in the Commander Petroni yards.
I have preserved one of the originals sides 4 air-scope when was Fino.

Anyone know the latest on this thread - is the boat nearly finished now?

By the way, even though the mystery is now solved through the vast knowledge of Black Tornado, you may be interested to know that an englishman found the old 36' white Dry Martini and restored the old paint job. See attached. Shame about the dreadful windshield and leisure set up!!

Hi MF!
Established that the your 36' was a Dry Martini like the Martini's stripes in the back of the original deck confirm without doubts...
http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/5...yisternoq7.png
..like this picture of the Dry Martini(1- look the engines hatches) in 1973 show to us,
we must to discover if it was the former Aeromarine IX/Dry Martini(I) or the Fino/Red Vengeance/Dry Martini(II red),because the third Dry Martini(the lighter of 1973) now is in England.
look my comparison about your 36' and the two Dry Martini.
http://img483.imageshack.us/img483/3...resizedzo7.jpg
Here the hull of the Aeromarine IX in a picture taken in the CTC in 1972. The two stripes in yellow and blue seem are the same of that came out during the restorations.
http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/3...o1resizpl2.jpg

http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/9...xnaplesho3.png
Above the first race of the new Aeromarine IX;Naples Trophy in 1972. We can see that the boat haven't the exhausts on the sides but on the stern like all the boats with the Kiekhaefer (why Richie?).
http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/158...jaresizhj8.jpg
Instead the Fino(powered MerCruiser) had the exhausts on the sides and when Bonomi bought it, must bung the holes on the sides.

That four holes bunged must be there today. Instead there are only two but clearly are not of the former Merc. exhausts shape.

I think that can be in a reasonable conditions to affirm that it was the former first 36' of Carlo Bonomi. The Aeromarine IX of 1972.

Black Tornado 01-09-2007 01:16 PM
