We were at a race in San Francisco and about 1 hour into the race we were closed in with fog banks.....everybody came off plane and started creeping forward very cautiously....the sun came out over our heads, but the water was still very foggy.
We heard one boat take off under power while the rest of us felt our way out of the fog banks.
Bob Nordskog had used the sun casting a shadow on his lifeline on the forward deck, to double check his compass...he felt so secure with that double check, he just took off....he also won the race.

Here's a pic of my '78 Donzi Criterion. Less than 30 Criterions ever made, only about 10 or so with my cockpit configuration. Only thing not strictly old school is the injected 502
