You have to admit, that KAAMA paint job - whichever boat it was on - was one of the most recognizable of "Classic" Offshore.
I would love to find one of the old Kamma's and be restoring just like Rat is doing with the Mic Light.
I'll take one of these anyday over a brand new ??????(fill it in yourself) cat that's doing 170 mph - with a paint job that involves 30 colors....

I have a friend of mine that about 10 years ago bought a 36 cig race boat that he was going to update and put big motors on, so he proceeded to put the boat up on 55 gal drums and bought all the parts. When he had everything, he had the boat sanded and guess what was under the paint? KAAMA ,that put a dent on his idea.....havent seen him in years and he moved but always wondered if he ever restored it.

Who has the Larry Smith Scarab? We have the original Powerboat Mag boat that we raced in "B" class . Boat was re-rigged and we have run 105 mph with a pair of 510 1X4 9.5:1 comp. legal B class engines with # 5's.

The 36 foot Cigarette that was originally Dante's Inferno and then KAAMA and then Osmosis....when it was owned by Eddie Trotta.....yup, that Eddie Trotta, of Discovery Channel fame who is also a world class bike builder.

It was very common for all of us to get hurt on a regular basis racing in open ocean conditions. As evidenced by Betty winning the World Championship in '77, and then sitting around for a few hours with a wet towel to soak up the blood from her mouth and jaw injury.

Don Aronow himself while testing broke ribs in a 28 foot Donzi and his other crew members got knocked out.

In the '79 Bacardi, Betty was knocked out for 15 minutes or so, I was knocked out in the same race, but for a shorter duration. Jack Stuteville the throttleman for # 3 injured his knee and had to jump over at a checkpoint at the same race.

Rocky was injured many times and once almost was killed in San Francisco. Open ocean racing was a tough sport and Betty was not given any special consideration because she was a woman....the ocean doesn't care. She was very good and knew how to put all the right pieces together to build a championship team.

We knew she was tough and she knew she was tough, so we never spoke about the fact that it might be different for her....the only ones who did, were the media, trying to make something out of her being a woman....the other racers just accepted her at face value and she very much liked that.

That is not along sleeve T-shirt.

Betty had her clothes custom made and that was a cashmere sweater with the name of the boat woven into the sleeve design.

Not something that was available to the other crews or the public at large.

I have the KAAMA Mini hawk which she did own.

I believe it would have been 1978 38' Larry Smith. The Powerboat Mag boat which my friend and customers has was the 1st Dupont Kevlar boat. I think her's was a few after. Not sure.
