I spoke to the guy also about buying it, he also told me he was putting 2.4 outboards on it . i told him he was nuts, and had to educate him that merc has not made a 2.4 in about 10 years. that boat will never get out of its own wake with 4/250hp outboards. that boat was never owned by bobby kaiser. the problem i see , is that it would cost a fortune to rig and still be a 14 yr old boat. probably the only guy who could rig that boat properly would be bob's old t-man errol lanier.

Re: tin boat problem...OLD COUGAR

the boat has never been rigged, not a hole in it. i was told it was built for howard arnesson

Rik 10-17-2006 08:18 PM

Re: tin boat problem...OLD COUGAR

It was not built for Howard Arneson. We never had an aluminum boat. We had the WOOD boats..

It was built for Arneson Surface Drives. The wedge plates were welded to the hull.

ASD8-16 are the drives that were supposed to be rigged on the boat.

LOL . . so ya met Wayne huh? yes he has some interesting thoughts on the 'ol Cougar. its actually a pretty cool piece, never been rigged or wet. i will probably stop an see him tommorow. anybody got any questions on the boat? i know he has been wanting to move that thing though. he was even playing with the idea of putting some kind of canopy on it and deisels. i agree the outboars wont do that boat very well, hell toss in a set of 750's an have some fun with it  :D .

Wayne has been around boating for some time an has had some interesting rigs. think he just got rid of one of those big 'ol Nitro's. 43 footer i think.

Like I just have wrote in the thread "Systems" that unrigged Cougar seems a sister boat of Reporter, the 38' that Curtis used to race in 1988.
It seems be a 38' with the tunnel extended behind the sponsons.

Quadruple outboards? That´s hilarious!! Needs big block V8´s or lambo´s, or turbines, or...............anything but outboards!! (It may be heavy and old, but I love it.)

Re: tin boat problem...OLD COUGAR

Well your all wrong

1) The black unrigged boat was built originally for Mandy Fernandez or Edd Sheer; it’s a similar design to the Seahawk/Reporter, we supplied two identical hulls to them in 1990.

2) Reporter was the old Seahawk 36', last I heard many years ago it was still rotting away in Italy, it was a fantastic boat, I raced with Steve Curtis in it during the1988 season, we came 2nd in the world championships in Guernsey behind Mr Buzzi in four-engined 46’ mono during a very very rough week of racing, had about ten monos behind us before the next cat.

3) Endangered Species was originally called Supercat and was raced in England by Barry Sampson & Bill Bonner, the engines where Bonner V12 Jags, it then was sold to Robert Cooke who raced it as Champaign Mumm & John Player Special, It was then sold to Richard Strutton and we converted it to the centre cockpit layout with canopy, Richard S never used it and I sold it to Errol Lanier in the US and it became Endangered Species, I think the owner was Clay Wilson, that was in the early 90’s

Re: tin boat problem...OLD COUGAR

Many Thanks Cougar 46. Your experience it's very helpful to us!
I don't know that Reporter was the former Seahawk 36'!
By the way I wrote that the cat unrigged was similar to Reporter and that Endangered Species wasn't Reporter and you have confirmed alls two.

Re: tin boat problem...OLD COUGAR

Cougar46, rumors about "Cougar" where Steve Curtis won the World Title in Key West 1987 said that it was the 41'(?) ,third and last cat of Sal Magluta. He never raced with it because was prisoned before the cat was rigged.
It's true?
The others two cats,36' Seahawk and the 38'(?) Team Seahawk was new boats or former something?

Was Reporter extended? I always thought it was around 38´. Always loved that boat. Shall never forget the Cowes race when (maybe you were on board?) over the PA system the commentators relayed the fact that you guys were screaming up the Solent at around 110mph trying to catch up and win whilst in second place.

Black Tornado 10-19-2006 04:09 AM

Re: tin boat problem...OLD COUGAR

I think also that Reporter was a 38'.
Maybe the tunnel extended in the transom brought it from 36' to 38'.

Re: tin boat problem...OLD COUGAR

The old bengal bay 38' was bought by a friend of mine at a customs auction. It now has twin T58 turbines in it.
There was a black 38 unrigged years ago that also went to auction. The boys who bought it had it on display at the key west race maybe 10years ago. I wonder if that was the same hull. It had no motors hatches at that time

Bengal Bay was one of the SeaHawk boats the bigger of the two I think.

just spoke to Wayne today . . . .this Cougar has been converted to outboards. . . . what a waste. . . . i guess to each his own but i'll never understand it. apparently its getting 4 big Yammies on it. not sure what that is going to do for the ballance of the boat. we shall see

So. What do you guys think the boat will top out at with quadruple outboards? I´ll go for around 80mph.

nocigarette 10-28-2006 08:38 AM

Re: tin boat problem...OLD COUGAR

i bet the boat wont go over 70, they are just plastering the out board brackets on, not even setting them at a certain height.............this will be a debockle, i will keep you guys posted.....

the brackets are in place i will take some pics today.....................4 225 yamahahas...........i still cant believe it........

dnebo 04-14-2007 05:47 PM

I seen the boat going south on I75 in Michigan today
It was rigged with outboard brackets and what looked too be inboard dieseles?? It also had one canopy on the starboard side.
Unfortunately I did not have my camera.
Wayne was rigging it to have outboards, I thought it may run 60MPH with outboards.
The bracketts were still mounted and what looked to be dieseles were installed??? Is Wayyne going to run outboards and diesel inboards??

I think this might be a good idea:evilb: .
I figure the boat might run almost 65MPH with inboard diesel and outboards, What an innovative idea:evilb: .
I am sure somebody hear must know what Wayne's plan is, I have not talked to him latey.
I am not sure that inboard and outboards are not the answer but this could be a very cool old school project.

Who knows whats up in Waynes world??

It is a seahawk boat I thought it was a 38' but never pulled a tape on it. Any how it is 2' longer now

There was a 36' Seahawk Cougar tin cat,a 38' Team Seahawk,Cougar tin cat and, in 1987, the last one 41' that Magluta drove maybe for one or two races only before "follow" the FBI to give some explanations about drug and omicides.

It sounds as though we may have the 41' I guess I should measure it. When we got it it was painted dark blue with silver stripes down the deck and U S CUSTOMS on the sides

It's oddly because that 41' was bought by Kobayashi that renamed it Bengal Bay Club mantaining the original Seahawk's colours.

Maybe it is a 38' I will pull a tape on it when I get the chance. It did have a tunnel extension if that helps

no tell'in with Wayne thats for sure. he changes gears pretty rapidly with that project. i had a buyer lined up to take it off his hands the week before he did the OB conversion. was going to keep pretty much as it was being built with the arnesons, maybe make it into a Systems clone. inspite of having a buyer Wayne had all that bracket work done than called me back to see if the buyer was still interested  . . . uhhh . . . no. Thats a shame about that boat but if you know Wayne he pretty much marches to his own beat. :D he even showed me renderings of a flying bridge kind of canopy thingie he wanted to put on that boat. I'll hafta call him and see what he's up to now with that thing. He had a pair of big Iveco/Buzzi diesels at his house last i saw but it sounds strange that he put them in along with the OB's. maybe he actually sold the package and just tossed them in the boat for shipping.
