Re: Dry Martini!!!! AWESOME!!!
Anyone know what was the Dry Martini 35' after the 1975?
I think that maybe the Italian driver De Angelis bought that 35 ' ran the Bacardi Trophy in May 08 1976 and then ' took it to Italy for some year. Then maybe that 35' came back in Usa. Where Kurt found that 35' and when? Charlie,Richie,Kurt...do you know something? |

Re: Dry Martini!!!! AWESOME!!!
Beautiful images Ron! Many thanks!
I would like to read your article about the Dry 35',but I can't find the magazine here or in Italy. :( |
Re: Dry Martini!!!! AWESOME!!!
I have an early draft in PDF format that I can email to you. Just PM me with your email address. Its too big to post here.
Just don't mind the photo captions, they weren't done in this early version. Glad you liked it. It's nice to know people actually read the words between the photos. :D Ron |
Re: Dry Martini!!!! AWESOME!!!
Ron - thanks again for the copy!! (got it this Sat.) Great article!

Re: Dry Martini!!!! AWESOME!!!
That boat is jaw-droppingly gorgeous. Shouldn´t be allowed!!

Re: Dry Martini!!!! AWESOME!!!
Trivia: The boat in the background in post #47 bottom picture "Mollywood" was a 38 Cobra. Rocky Aoki "Benihana", leased this boat for a race in San Francisco, broke the boat in half (similar to "Buckshot's" accident) and broke his leg-this was Rocky' last race..... :(

Then Rocky came back in Offshore three years after and...won. With Howard Quam in the Active 37' cat Flap Jack, renamed Benihana. The race;Benihana Grand Prix of course! Only two months after that victory,Aoki and Quam crushed their cat and Rocky was re-badly injuried in the legs and ankle! :( http://img61.imageshack.us/img61/953...ollewookn9.png http://img61.imageshack.us/img61/446...wod2006iy0.jpg Was Really that Mollewood the former broke boat? |

Thanks Robert for the info - saved me asking the question!

Re: Dry Martini!!!! AWESOME!!!
Ron,
Great article on Dry Martini! Just a little note about the date of the photograph. It could not have been taken in 1973 as shown on this site or 1972 as printed in you article. First, in 1973 the Point Pleasant race was the Hennessy Grand Prix, not the Benihana Grand Prix and the boats were docked at the Kings Grant Inn not the Shrimp Box(which is still there today). Second, Jerry Dehenau's "Mollewood" wasn't built in 1973. Third, Wille Diaz's "EL Boss" wasn't in the '73 race. You can also see the bow of Betty Cook's "Kaama" with "US-1" on the side which would probably put the photo in 1980 because she was the 1979 US champion. If it were 1973 "US-1" would be on the side of Dr. Bob Magoon's Kiekhaefer Aeromarine. The 1980 Benihana Grand Prix was a fantastic race with Bill Elswick, Dan Broadwater, and George Gowan in "Long Shot" a 39 foot Cigarette beating out Vince Fasano and Sammy James in "Vincentive" a 38 foot Bertram. Fasano and James were accessed a three minute penalty for running through a spectator fleet. I am a plethora of useless information on offshore power boat racing and finally have an outlet. I have saved everything from 25 years ago and as soon as I figure out how, I will share it all with the OSO community. Keep up the good work. I love Extreme Boats magazine and Offshore Only. Sincerely, John |
Re: Dry Martini!!!! AWESOME!!!
Skrap,
Welcome to the board. In post 27 Ron acknowledges there was a mistake ie; the date on the photo. I think the photo was from 79/80? Looking forward to seeing some of your material on this forum!! Would you happen to be the "Crazy Greek"?? |
Re: Dry Martini!!!! AWESOME!!!
That picture I think was taken in 1979 because Betty Cook was National champ the first time in 1978. Then there is the Cobra 38' Mollewood that after was semi-destroyed during tests before the San Francisco in september, like Robert have rembered to us.
|
Re: Dry Martini!!!! AWESOME!!!
Sorry, I'm not the "Crazy Greek." Just like in college, I didn't read too much, I just looked at the pictures. Again, keep up the good work and I look forward to more "Old School."
Sincerely, John |

Sincerely, John I think the first year of the Benihana GP was 1975, in 1974 the Race was moved to Atlantic City for one year and Art Snapper Norris won there. I t was still the Hennessy race there. I'm still trying to find a copy of Extreme Boats magazine, they don't seem to reply to e-mail sent to them requesting what book/magazine stores carry the magazine Keep up the good work. Thank you Jim |

Re: Dry Martini!!!! AWESOME!!!
Dear Black Tornado,
Billy Martin of Clark, NJ was US Champion in 1978 when he won eight races, and Betty won in 1979, so the picture would have to be 1980. I feel like this is turning into the"Zapruder Film." Extrermely scrutinized! It's nice to know that there are others out there like me. Take Care, John |

Re: Dry Martini!!!! AWESOME!!!
You are correct!! I am so sorry. I better check my facts a little closer next time. Betty won back to back tittles and I should have remembered that. To quote Robert DeNiro"...you are very good!"

Re: Dry Martini!!!! AWESOME!!!
Black Tornado,
More evidence to support the "Dry Martini" photo being taken in 1979. You are correct that the Mollewood/Aoki accident took place in September of '79 and when I checked my photos from the 1980 Benihana, Betty was in a cat not the deep vee shown in the background of that picture. Well I'm glad we put that to rest. As you can tell, I have too much free time on my hands, but I love this stuff. Old school is cool! Sincerely, John |
Re: Dry Martini!!!! AWESOME!!!
Skrap
You are right to say that Betty Cook ran the Benihana Trophy in 1980 with cat, while in the photo the bow of Scarab is seen with US-1. But I did not take this test for showing that it was the 1979 because Betty Cook had both cat and the mono Kaama before the race, then to decide what to use. Then condition of the sea misleaded her to use the mono one. |
Re: Dry Martini!!!! AWESOME!!!
Keep it up fellas!

Re: Dry Martini!!!! AWESOME!!!
Dear Dry Martini,
I agree but, the fact that the Benihana was run on July 18, 1979 in New Jersey and "Mollewood" was destroyed in September 15,1979 in California would be more validation. I don't believe that "Mollewood" returned to New Jersey with the "Mollewood" name after the crash in San Francisco. If you know that it didn't return, then we would be correct in placing that photo in 1979. Let me know what you think. I really enjoyed this. Phil M could tell us the answer in two seconds, but he probably doesn't care. Take Care, John |

This picture was taken in 1979. If you see the line up of boats in front of the restaurant is different than the other photo.
In the foreground is Gone Banana's a modified class 34 foot banana boat I built for Chuck Fogarty. Ahead of him starting to go out, is Betty in her V. Tied up close to the dock is the Benihana cat and the Michelob Light Scarab....no Mollewood anywhere in sight. |
Re: Dry Martini!!!! AWESOME!!!
Um.... - Jerry DeHeanu - and Rocky - were testing the boat - in San Francisco - actually - we were about to take off to film them during the test - but were delayed. It was then the accident happened - and the boat stuffed and broke off the first 1/3 of the boat - It was in 1979 - am almost positive - and late in the season -
I dont remember what happened to the boat - but long ago - had some photo of it in inside storage. Memories again - they start to fade at my age ! Hope i brought some light to your questions - PHL The accident was in 1979 - as I was fliming then on Super 8 sound film - and I converted to Umatic 3/4 inch Tape in 1980 - and filmed Jerry at a race and interviewd him about the accident the year before ! Hope this settles when the accident happned - it was in 1979 - unless i am terribly mistaken ! PHIL |
Re: Dry Martini!!!! AWESOME!!!
The picture is definitely from 1979. Both Mollewood and Dry Martini are on Phil Lewis's NNRT video of that 1979 race. I guess the question is "who was driving Dry Martini in the '79 Benihana - it sure wasn't Carlo Bonomi...???"

Years ago - when I had my Bertram delivered from Florida - by a guy named Mike Gillivan - who did many offshore racing transports at the time - told me - the Dry Martini - had the hook sanded off - at the rear of the boat - while doing that - they broke thru the glass - it was that thin - Mike told me then - tell your friends not to push the boat too hard - as it was extremely thin back there ! an interesting side note ! Re: Dry Martini!!!! AWESOME!!!
Charlie what´s the deal with the pic from your Banana Boat site of the transom of Dry Martini?? I figure it´s a the 35 rather than wide body 36, but when was this taken?? And the hand grab rail behind the cockpit - was that on the raceboat originally?? Almost looks like it was undergoing a (gulp) conversion to pleasure!!
And the dark area on the underside of the hull? (Trying desparately to upload it from here but my pc won´t let me!!) |

Whatever is in the photo was on the boat. The area on the botom was being sanded or had been sanded to smooth it. |
