Remember fuel injection at that time was still not controlled by computers. I tested at Lake X and the best results were with the two four barrels over the injection of the time. I was also using an outside engine builder...McBetts...who really could get some horsepower from a set up that they were very familiar with. Mercury tended to stay with what worked until they were beaten and then they innovated again.....not Mr K...Mercury themselves as a corp. Just out of curiosity what was the output of your engines? Also, from the little mechanical knowledge I have, I gather that a mechanically controled injection system produced a more restricted power band, much more towards top revs. Would this play a role in bad weather conditions when it seems that there is more throttle action? Thank you for the explanation and the info, Charlie.

Phil. Yes, the rougher the course, the better the carb boats seemed to do, we could pick it up at lower RPM's and seem to power our way out of the deep troughs. |
Stack injection systems are great on peak torque but terrible on low end grunt because of the size of the runners.
They are just too big for any good low end grunt so the only way to make a good engine is to build it as big in displacement you can (as long as rulers permit). Also they need a plenum on top of them to keep somewhat air available when you mash them from low to get better rpm pick up, just look why no stacks without plenums doesn´t race anymore anywhere. I have a SBC Kinlser Stack myself...and I´m starting to get bold because of it ;-) |

No carbs here, a picture of the Aeromarine Injection System.
Unfortunately this picture was taken from a publication not specialised in Offshore racing and I do not know the identity of the boat which was powered by these beautiful engines. |
Richie - Hey you old fart. I still occasionlly visit S&F outboard race site, but I had completely forgotten about this one. I enjoyed the Bahamas 500 string and all of Brownie's writings (talk about an old fart! Always reminded me of Jonathon Winters). Maybe Brownie will talk about he and Jake Trotter racing together. The last I remember, you were living a few doors down from where Bill and Vida lived in Miami...are you still there? Any idea where Doug Janisch is? If I can find it on this darn computer, I am going to throw out a bunch of names that I wrote down awhile ago and ask any and all for info on them.

OOPS! On second thought...It Jim Bruell and Jake Trotter...Not Brownie and Jake racing together.

Phil: You have out done yourself with the video, I am very proud to have been a part of that era in Offshore, I hate to say it but Dry Martini really looks great, had to have been one of the prettiest boats of its time. wish we had video of some of the welcoming cerimonies after the win`s ( prize givings ) anyway, thank you for restoring the past, great memories for me, it`s like it was yesterday, keep up the good work, remember I want to see what Deauville looks like today, maybe I`ll try and visit one day. thanks, your friend 7XCHAMP
Richie, Your wish is my command. A couple of pictures which may remind you a thing or two..... As you can see, things haven't changed much, even the weather was as it was during your last visit and the little bar is still there. Have a nice week end, my friend. Phil. |
Attn: Seeroy. Nice to see you over here. I raced with Jake and Jim an separate occasions. I'll give the guys a couple of stories if you will share a few of Bill's. When you are in So. Fla, give me a call 305-332-7611 and we will have a couple.....

Hey Brownie - I remember you standing with Bill and I when he took possesion of the 50' Cougar Cat. You said, "Steve, this boat is going to make your brother famous".
|
Brownie - Go to Scream & Fly, Racing history, Life at Lake X in the 60's...I wrote alot of stories there.
-Steve |
OK Brownie - No stories yet but I will post a few pics to test my skills. This picture....I flew our support aircraft (1954 model C-131) into Opa Locka to pickup something and Bill met us in Popeyes Bus and took us to lunch. That's me on left, Joe, Don, Glen, Craig and Bill on right. CRAAAP, looks like I can't submit pictures. I will try Scream and Fly, Outboard and racing history, Lake X in the 60's

Hi Steve from an offshore fan. Your stories over on S&F are wonderful. The likes of you and Richie should definately get all this stuff into print if it's possible. I am a huge fan of the old days. The racers of today are all doing a great job too - but the golden days for me were the 70´s. God I love those boats!!! By the way - can you confirm for me if this is a cig 36?
And is that Billy Martin?? Thanks again - more stories please!! |
Nigel, excuse me if I intervene but I believe you deal with the Jersey Devil III in the version with 6 Mercury instead the original with 4. As for the person that points out 6 with the fingers I don't know Ed Sims but did it perhaps resemble some to Martin?
However there is a recent thread here that speaks of that strange Cigarette. |
see above
|
Nige....I think you may be looking at a young photo of Randy Rabe who was another wild Mercury outboard guy.
|
The Pacemaker of Randy Raby was a Memco 28' with 4 Mercury. Totally different boat.
There was the Six Pac of Juan Fernandez a Magnum with 6 Mercury. |
Marco......not the boat, the person in the photo...Randy Rabe

great film, love that "lady nara" and "fino"

Hi I'm stefano from Italy, i write here because of a boat found in italy, near Livorno. I'm quite sure it's a '73 cigarette 36 but the only thing i know is it was converted into a pleasure boat as a prototype. I never found pictures of a #717 boat on my books or on the net (and i searched a lot!). probably it's not the original number. Under the black paint it's white. The bad news is that the boat has been hardly modified to make an open deck model and i'm very disappointed about that. I hope it's something interesting for you and i will be very happy if somone here knows something about the boat.

Oh my God!!!! That's my favourite boat of all time!!!!!!!!! Quick - somebody loan me enough cash to buy it and restore it to its original ERAF colours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a find! Thanks Stefano!!! Are these pictures old? You speak of major modifications?
|
iSorry, but we are late. Pictures were taken two years ago. Just a few days later the deck was cut away. This is the boat now:
4 engines: http://img68.imageshack.us/img68/4836/12aag9.jpg http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/8779/12bgd4.jpg 2 engines: http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/3792/29hxc4.jpg I have been involved in the new design, but as i said i'm still sad for what happened. |
I don't understand!........are there not enough center console boats available for sale????!
I just don't get it!!!!! :( |
Un offshore chiamato ERAF
Benvenuto a bordo StefanoDesign
Viareggio-Bastia-Viareggio 1974, Giulio De Angelis exults for the uproarious victory just gotten beating the his two more' great rival Balestrieri and Bonomi. Close to him in the place of navigator his child greatest Elio, famous driver of F1 of the years 70-80 tragically disappeared in France in 1986. |
An offshore named ERAF
Welcome aboard StefanoDesign.
Ugly end for a glorious 36' Italian. Without offense for you that you have collaborated to modernize the boat. Been born in 1972 as first 36' of Giulio De Angelis that from few he had begun the adventure in the offshore under the push of the friend-rival Vincenzo Balestrieri, after so many successes in the circuit competitions, originally the boat was of sky blue color on the sides and white in deck and hull and brought what will become' the number of De Angelis: 96 and the name ERAF from the initials of his 4 sons;Elio, Roberto, Andrea, Fabiana. De Angelis disputes' with that boat then three seasons 1972,73s and 74 abandon it and then sell it to Beppe Roda that in 1976 dispute the Viareggio-Bastia-Viareggio leaving it nearly unchanged in the colorations but renaming it Damolu' (other probable acronym) and using the n.80. As Damolu' the boat remained to take dust in a small shipyard in the Dock of Viareggio for a few years until' an industrial of the paper from Leghorn, Meschi, looking for something to have a good time him in summer comes upon' in it. Taken care of and rigged by the mechanic Antonini it was ready to dispute the last VBV, edition 1980, in the colors of as and' photographed in the post above. Of her we know nothing thin to today. De Angelis had then other 2 Cigarette 36' the ex Lady Nara (II) of Bonelli and the Black Tornado (I) of Balestrieri, renamed always Eraf but this is another story. You can find online photo in my file: http://offshoreworld36.spaces.live.com / PersonalSpace.aspx?_c02_owner=1&_c = Or on the English site Boatmad in the precious and beautiful gallery of images of Graham Stevens |
if someone ever turns" lady nara" into a fishboat, keep it to yourself,i don't want to know,it's like hearing your childhood sweetheart is a...........
|
....now i can understand what it would be if i drastically change the appearance of my boat......
...STefano, are you sure the cutted deck has been destroied ? I could have used it as a template......... |
...considering the modifications in fiberglass for the outboards, why not make a new boat from her ??????(without destroyng a great 36 ??????)
|
What terrible news............................

I think I'd prefer to remember the boat like this. Marco - hope you don't mind I have pinched a shot from your archive at the address you give on a previous reply:-
what a classic racer it was. |

i don't understand why the people take a boat and modify it at your pleasure to start a production....I mean, like in this case, Outboards mean adding a platform structurally strong, adding stringers, cutting everything for center console and construct new floors, laying out everything....Way too much work, i would prefer building one from start... My Two Cents.. Honestly i like the results, but i am sad for the boat ...........since mine has gone trough a similar process....and i knew from people i know that a man in my marina was looking at her with the same projects that eraf went trough (converted to CC)...at least i bougth the boat before this happens... |

what a classic racer it was. However this photo has a curious anecdote because was shot (not from me) at Viareggio in 1972, few minutes before one of the MerCruisers exploded really while the boat was berthed in docks. A connecting rod had gone out from the pan and it was planted in the hull. Giancarlo Antonini told me while he was rigging the boat in 1980 to have seen the wound that it still brought in the bottom of the engines bay. Perhaps who has worked on the boat for this last modifications he has still noticed the scars.... |

In Italy they remain at least two other Cigarette 36' to save.
One is the former Lady Nara (I), the mythical winner of the 1971 CTC. The English know it well. The other more and more important because' is the first 36' ever built by Aronow together with the Aeromarine I of Magoon. It deals with the ex Black Tornado-Eraf-Ego. 36' with more' victories gotten with also the Dry Martini (III),now in England. And considering that the Aeromarine I was modified radically from the BAM(another bad story), you can imagine the importance of that 36.' It seems you are found in the Yards Primatist of Bruno Abbate. |

Thanks for all the informations you all gave me, i am impressed about how many things Black Tornado knows about this boats.
@ MF, i will ask if some parts of the boat are still in the boatyard, but i'm not optimistic, because ther is not much space to keep "unuseful"(for them) things. Be sure i will make everything is possible, i watched the 3d about your restoration and i will be happy to help you, if i can. at least with pictures. It's a very hard project and if i think that alfred was in perfect condition, well.... i can understand your disappointment. Alfred was in Cecina, near Livorno, not at Primatist. it has been there for at least 20 years without moving. |
