Found a few more from Way Back In The Day, a 1971 Detroit New's story about Bill Wishnick and how Offshore Racing may come to Detroit. The race would be from Detroit to Port Huron and back, to bad it never happened ! The other story is about a 29 year old Bill Martin winning the Casale Trophy with his 33' Magnum, Hustler IV. It's a Great story hope you can read it !

Really Fantastic!
Many Thanks h2oboater!
Interesting to know that Catalina race in 1972 was the first victory of the Magoon's new Aeromarine III that came only in September. Interesting too to see the red/white Popeye Cig.36' of Dominic Visconsi.
About the race of Detroit in 1971 it's lacking the story.
Can you post it and others Way Back in the Day?

The paper is very old but here it is. The last paragraph read's Chicago hopes to hold a across lake Michigan event. Detroiter Freddie Alter a Gold Cup driver has sought backing for a Ambassador Bridge - Blue Water Bridge and return race. [ Back then Fred Alter was a local Unlimited Hydro driver and had a Wood Offshore V bottom boat called the Griffin he planed to race ] If you enlarge the paper's print you can read most of it.

Here's one for the way back in the way back crowd.....36 Bertram. Never seen the '666' one before (dig the font on the deck!) nor the hatch / scoop ? just aft. Any idea who ran it & colors?

Buy 1978 Billy Martin was the man, on the cover of Motorboat, they said he the fastest man on the ocean. Even Betty Cook thought he was the best driver then ! I like the use of a bungee cord holding down the shifters

I have had a copy of that Motorboat magazine, but then I gave it to a my friend.
I remember there were more pics of Martin.

Wow! Gotta love this site! Old school rules!!

priceb 04-03-2007 06:17 AM

This old stuff is so cool. I could read the old school boating mags and sites non stop. I think there should be a profile page for both a. old school boats, and b. old school drivers with profiles on their lives, careers and if they are still alive etc.

I'd love to know what happened to guys like Billy Martin, Art Norris, Dante Tagnoli etc.

Also, what happened to their boats
