I'm in doubt about the fact that Mr.Goodwrench is not in Kevlar and that there were two Benny in Kevlar and one was destroyed. In what event?
The repairs my dad made to the Mr. Goodwrench boat were done in fiberglass. So at a minimum the deck was glass. I'll ask him if the hull had any Kevlar in it.

Will be interesting to know because if the Mr. Goodwrench is not in Kevlar maybe the boat was one of the first 38' builded....Whittaker(Benihana76),Streaker76(Criste x),MissWD40...

I believe that one of the last bertram 38` race boats built was the one I built for Rocki, the number 5 boat, That was one of the lightest boats built, hull and deck weighed 2,200 lbs bare.
Most of the 38`s were Kevlar, The Sammie James first boat was glass, second one was Kevlar 49, and every boat after was Kevlar 49. When I bought the # 5 boat for Rocki, Sammie James had already left Bertram, and Russ Specht was in charge of special projects, then he left shortly there after. Now that I am writing this, I remember the Elswick boat that Bill Sirois was invlved with, was probably after the #5. Guess someone should trace the 38`s as was done with the Cig. 36`s. I know the light blue Natural light was pretty much destroyed when the Whittington bros. rented it and ran one of the Miami races, probably 1978 or 9 era. I`m sure if someone contacted Sammie James he could tell the whole story, and how many were actually built. I will try and and remember the ones I know
2) Factory boats from Bertram for Sammie James 1- glass 1- Kevlar 49, Later sold to Preston Henn Swap Shop
2) Rocki Aoki 1- with Smitty #4 1- with Richie #5
1) Dark blue and Yellow Oscar Trost
1) Brown & beige Sandy Sattullo, later sold to Arnold Glass
1) White Wally Franz Brazil Richie , still in Brazil
1) ? Preston Henn Light blue Lanier, ( destroyed ?? ) by Whittington Bro`s Miami
1) Billy Elswick Color ????? Sirois built.
That totals 9 boats. Those nine saw several different owners, names and numbers. I`m not sure about Howard Quam, if his was new direct to him or someone elses boat?????????
T2x probably has some info. as well. Have fun 7XCHAMP

That`s right: Remember Gail and Paulie she used to paint with, painted the stripes, and did the graphics in that shop, that`s why the #5 boat looked different from the rest, the number etc. was very different from the other boats, HORBA has a picture of the boat, I have seen someplace. I ran two races in that boat, first Newport bch Calif. My first exciting ride with Rocki, once I got him settled down and his Butt into the bolster we hooked up and were leading when the rear motor had an electrical problem, ( rod came through the block and knocked a spark plug wire off ) if you know what I mean. Caught on fire, ( Oil fire is all ) had to use the extinguisher system dry chemical, huge mess. Next race St. Pete. we again were leading after a real close start with Arnold Glass and Riggs ( Melenko ) rubbing gunwales at 90+ mph. and everyone else neck and neck, we broke away from the pack leading again, then on the north end of the course running in 4` to 6` long swells, we came off one, Rocki cranked the wheel hard, when we landed we Barrell rolled couple times, I got spit about 100 yds out. broke six ribs, punctured a lung, broke my arm and nose, Long story about the whole episode, same race Joey Ipp. dumped, we couldn`t believe we were both in the hospital at the same time, good laugh, but hurt like hell. Next race I had Gene Lanham run for me, then turned everything over to Errol Lanier, entire team, I was done with Rocki, Lost my Rolex in the accident, and almost my life. Good to hear from you again. 7XCHAMP

I forgot about Christex boat, I think that was an original from Bertram as well, I consulted with that owner, he never did very well with the boat, an also ran rig.

Richie, your stories are always savory to be read and full of information for me.
Only two precisations about Quam's 38'; the first Flap Jack former second Whittaker(in Kevlar) and Henn's Bertram 49er,was badly damaged during the same Benihana GP 1978 when you was on #5 with Aoki.
After that Quam bought a second 38' new (I think),Flap Jack in white and then in white-red.
That boat was sold to Toleman in 1980.
About Cristex it seem that was not a new boat but the former second Streaker of Preston Henn in 1976.

Does anyone have any color pictures of Streaker 2? I've only seen black and white pictures.
