cosmic12 05-15-2007 07:13 AM

Good luck I hope you get what you want and more. Wish I could aford it and or had the time

Dude! Sweet! 05-15-2007 11:51 AM

Man it tears me up to see a boat like this up for sale at this price when there's no way for me to make sense of buying it.

I've watched so many cars that I should have bought 10, 15 or 20 years ago for next to nothing go through the roof in recent years...

1989 - "Man that is a really rad old Camaro Trans Am car... but what would I do with it. Besides, $2,500 seems like a lot for a worn out old race car..."

1995 - "Man, I can't believe that they're getting $45k for an old Camaro Trans Am car!"

2005 - "Holy crap, an old Camaro Trans Am car just sold for $150k! And it was a no-name car with limited history!"

Anyone want to start telling stories of laughing at guys trying to sell Superbirds back in the mid '80s?

Good luck Rat! It's a great boat with a pure-bred pedigree that can't be replicated.

A buddy of mine does resto-rods.....back in highschool he had a pro-street 69 camaro.....sold it back in the early 90's for barely $10k......then unloaded a all numbers matching 69 chevelle for $2500 cause it needed body work and was starting to rust though the spring perches in the rear....now its all he talks about on how stupid he was selling them off!!! lol

Black Tornado 05-15-2007 03:26 PM

Ratman I'm very sorry that you must do it.
I hope that will go on good hands that continues the restoration.

Hi Ratman,

I am interested in your boat.

How much do think it would cost to finish it? Is there a massive amount of work to be done? Please fill me in as much as possible. Are the stringers, transom etc ok?

Finally, how much do you think the boat as is will go for? What price were the engines/legs you were going to put in it?

priceb 05-16-2007 05:58 AM

So does anyone have any answers???? I"m impatient!. :D

That boat is a bulletproof tank..........If i was a little richer and not in the middle of a mag restore i would remorgage my house and finish that boat.........

Phil it makes my stomach turn to see this thing on ebay...........

Good luck and i hope it goes to a old school lover........

Dude! Sweet! 05-16-2007 08:49 AM

PriceB, she was for sale in the classified, but the ad appears to be gone. I believe that he was asking $20k for the boat $85k for the motors only and $80k as a package deal. The boat includes the 3A drives, the big dual ram k planes, an aluminum trialer and all the rigging. It seemed like it was a pretty easy project.

I don't know the guy, but I believe his mother just passed away so he may be indisposed right now.

As I recall, you have a family business in Huntington Beach. There are a few very good options if you'd like to have this boat finished locally. Matt at Mobile Marine Service in HB is my #1 choice. A great guy and as honest and straight forward as they come. He's on OSO and on the scope site (www.scopeinfo.com) as "Mobilemarine1". The second option would be SC Performance and Precision Marine, also in HB. SCP has a web site. Scott Conrad is a good guy and they do very nice work (check out the Spectre section on OSO) and Mark at Precision (which is run out of the back of SCP) is another super guy who does top notch work on a lot of very high end boats. They also have an arrive and drive deal where you can just fly in and they'll have your boat ready to go, including indoor storage. Finally, Paul Pfaff is also in HB. Paul is another genuinely good guy. PM me if you want.

Good luck, Sean

priceb 05-16-2007 09:08 AM

Hi Sean,

Thank you for the info. I'm going to HB on the 29th. I'm going to Vegas on the thursday till the monday, back on tues then to miami on the friday. :evilb:

I'm going to look around. If you are free we should catch up for a drink. I have been to SC performance, its around the corner from us (producer lane).

I'm going to see if I can extend my trip a little.

This boat is fantastic, but not sure still what i want. Again I appreciate the info

oh I forgot, mate, I havent forgotten to post all that stuff on classic offshore, but have been flat out at work, been on the gold coast, off to Dubai tomorrow, back in a week then off to USA. When I return I will scan it and put it on classic offshore

Brent

Dude! Sweet! 05-16-2007 12:54 PM

Brent, sounds good to me! My father flys back to NY on the 29th, so I should be around. I spend about half the week in my LA office and the other half in my Irvine office so it's not a hassle to be around. PM me or email and I'll give you my contact info. I'm always up for a cold beverage!

Later,

Sean

sorry it took so long to get back with you, ive been tied up making funeral arrangements etc.
the boat is in awsome condition zero rot any where, its a vinyl ester resin boat made with kevlar 49. it was stored indoors most of its life, i just stripped and refinished the engine compartment, the drives and tabs. the bottom is original pristine gelcoat, i stripped off the old paint job and blocked the sides of the boat twice to get it really straight. the hull sides and deck are in 3 coats of awlgrip epoxy primer ready for final sanding. i got a quote of 3500.00 to final sand and refinish the hull sides and deck. i have the awgrip paint to refinish the rest of the boat. it comes with just re upolstered bolsters and pads, a pair of 11plate bw72c trans, exhaust, a new 700 dollar offshore water pickup. and all fuel hoses and fitins to redo fuel system. just needs new power and its on!

Hi Ratman

What about the motors? I believe you have some for sale, can you please tell us about them? Also, the sterndrives, are they the ones in the pics? has any work been done to them?

the drives in the pic are the ones that come with the boat. they are ssm#3a with the 1.48 ratio. they are in great condition. i have a pair of 598 ci bbc blower motors. they are new with dyno time only. the make 1000+hp and 1050tq, they make 900+ft lbs of tq from 3000 to 6100 rpm. i have 80 in the motors and will take 50k. give me a call if you have any addl questions. the ebay reserve is set at 19k. phil 813-33-1442

Rat,

Are those the motors that Mark from Myrtle Beach built? If so, I've seen some of the stuff he's worked on and nothing but the best!!

You're taking a huge hit @ 50K!!

Thoughts & Prayers to you and your family. You've had a rough couple years. Hang in there man!!

I am sorry to hear this:( I wish there was a way, but I just can't swing it. Please!!!!!!! somebody save this boat. good luck hope all works out for ya:D

bouyhunter 05-22-2007 07:31 PM

How the hell did it take this long to find the goggles???

Sacrilege if you let it go this way - when you know it's ultimate demise. You have an opportunity to save a piece of history.
Remeber your Mistress? I remember after that wild-azz run we made, over dinner, you looked at me and said "we would've made Don proud today". This boat could also still have a life ahead.
Dude - you can't let the Mich Light get cut up into a gill-grabber.
I wish I had the coin to take her and finish what needs to be done. Just not in the cards for me at the moment.

I think it is kind of sick what is the inevetable for this boat........All these people on this site spend money hand over fist for new boat, but nobody wants to take the effort to save a piece of offshore racing history.......It is to much work for most....My last 7-8 years of my life has been spent searching a boat (old race boat) in my price range to restore with a limited budget...It really turns my stomach to see this boat go to waste............Good luck phil.........

I know one thing if i had the money for a new mti or skater, i sure in the hell would have a old school race boat sitting next to it the lift..........

nocigarette 05-23-2007 04:27 PM

Please tell me what is cooler than a boat like that.............................................. .................................................. ...................................

I've gotta agree with you on that.
Personally, I'd take the old-school boat over the MTI or Skater.

nocigarette 05-23-2007 05:34 PM

I dont know phil real well but i will say i really feel for him on this one.......

This is a real old school bummer,,,,,

Stormrider 05-24-2007 09:57 AM

ya know... its not buying the boats that is $, its keeping them.

Older 17 whaler w/ newer 4stroke 100hp yammy @ $12,000.
Bottom paint and put out in harbor on mooring for free.
Yearly maint...$500-1000.

Or...
Older 29mirage(or 26sutphen) w/ twins @ $18,000.
Keep at marina hi/dry @ $4000.
yearly maint... $3000-4000?? w/ nothing going wrong.

So the boats are only $5k difference, with a big difference in the boats. But yearly, that no maint. whaler will save you that every year.

so if i had the $... i'd buy the whaler, and mich light. :D

Chris Sunkin 05-25-2007 05:58 PM

Ratman,

Been trying to reach you about the Scarab. The e-mails bounce back, your PM's are off and your IM doesn't work. I also tried thru Ebay. If you still have the boat, PM or e-mail me.
