Wild Turkey
Hi everyone, new to the boards. I've seen some old posts with guys asking questions about this boat so I'd figure I'd pass some info along. Frank Lach still owns it. It's only been in the water a few times in the past 6-8 years. A combination of mechanical problems and his health have kept the boat in storage. The good news is that Frank has battled back and is recovering, and has pulled the boat out of storage. He plans on having is brought down the shore this week to have a little work done and he's hoping to have it in the water in a few weeks. As soon as I figure out how to post pics I'll put a few up of the boat in it's current state taken only a few days ago. After spending a couple of hours talking with him about his race days in the Turkey, the White Night, and Instant Air, he is very anxious to get it back out on the water.

Please send my best wishes to Frank.....we raced many times together and he is a good tough racer.
Hope to see him at the Point Pleasant race this year. Charlie McCarthy |
Charlie - Will do, I should see him tonight.
If anyone was curious the boat it is now running twin staggered 572's. |
Looking forward to seeing the boat and glad to hear Frank is doing well.......:)

Wild Turkey was/and still is one of my favorite old school boats. I used to see the boat at the Barnegat Bay races when I was a kid.
My old school favorite list is short, Lil Smidgen, Wolverine, Rated-X, Spirit, Warpath. And of course my father's last boat (18 or 19 years of ownership) the Hairy Canary. |
old school
Don't forget Jolly Roger!
|
Can someone please post pics of Wild Turkey? I remember seeing it several years ago on a lift behind a house on Barnegat Bay.

I miss those boat races in the bay (and in the 90's the radar shoot-outs in the bay), that's when there was some mystery of who had what boat, how fast it went. The internet and this site are great, but alot of the mystery is now gone. |

What are the chances of seeing pics of this classic boat in it's current state?

What power is in the boat now? Drives? I haven't seen Wild Turkey in 13 or 14 years, at least, but then again I haven't been boating on Barnegat Bay for at least 12 years.

Roger Mumm
Wish we could get Roger to tell us of the many stories he has tucked away in his head...that would be fun. Have heard some of them from him directly and they are all great. Also found 4 of the 9,31 ft Sprits he and Carlso Paez designed and built and was able to purchase # 3 built in 94which never has seen the water. Jeff Hayled out of Cold Water Mi. is doing some final rigging along with some work on the engines, and Roger might come up and work on them.I will post some pictures. Bud

I remember one of the Barnegat Bay races when "the Jolly Roger" aka Rodger Munn, won. That is a bad Magnum.
I also raced my 27 Magnum sport in the 1st bay race & he lapped me twice. Mine was called " Commotion " I think he owns my old 27 sport today. LS |
Was that the purple one from Chadwick? Chadwick Beach
Island had Jolly Roger, Wild turkey and Rated X all docked there during the summers. I grew up listening for them to fire up. |
Hello Rcsmith,
I had a 73 Purple Sport, but was not from Chadwick Beach Island, Was over in Brick and would run around the Bay with Roger( Red) and Rated X(Yellow) and Commotion(Blue) when Gary Roger's brother in law had it. back in the mid 70s Thank you Jim |
Don't forget Don Stolls 27 Sport " Boss Lady"....Small blocks.. I was in it at 80 mph.... My Sport ran 55 with the wind behind me & low on fuel. Those Volvo Drives were like a boat anchor.

Hello Steve(LuckyStrike),
I know what you mean about the stock Volvos being slow. Mine had the Shafts from Roger/Gary boats to run the Merc Clever props and Rogers Trim set up,, helped a lot. Don Stolls' Sport was a clean pretty White Magnum sport. a real sleeper if you were just looking at it. I got a custom pair of Volvo Speedo lower units from Don back then, Wally Harper and the Guys from MI made 4-5 pairs of them supposely. Was a interesting set of lowers. smaller in size then the Volvo Factory units. Thank you Jim |

I also remember the year that the Sanger Alley Cat entered a bay race and had the field covered until something broke, that was the beginning of the Cat era in the Bay Races, but then again my memory is not as good as some of you "old-timers' - Mr. Berk. I am sure there are lots of Wild Turkey and Barnegat Bay race stories from the 70's and 80's that could be told.... I always find them interesting. |

/iPhoto Library/Modified/2011/Aug 13, 2011/DSCN0705_2.JPG And this is the Wild Turkey and Summer Madness (Instant Air Freight) together in Summer 2012. /iPhoto Library/Modified/2010/Jul 5, 2010/IMG_0618.JPG Instant Air drives. Love these boats and so thankful these classic championship winners survived the huge hurricane. |
