What's a Classic Offshore?
#2
hey g...
i think it's that unique combination of the things you mention.
Perhaps from the 80's "heyday", classic, sharp lines. As for manufacturer...something aronow inspired (cigarette, apache), maybe from a company who had success racing like Banana, Scarab or Sutphen...i, personally think deep v's more than cats just because there were more of them "back in the day"...
just my .02..

I try to answer you;
Classic Offshore is all of this that concerns the world of the competitions Offshore (improper word for today's competitions) beginning from the fifties thin around the eighties.
In that years around the world competitions and championships that foresaw runs thick offshore in an only passage were disputed and not in two or more laps.
In the seventies in USA some competitions started to be disputed next to the coast with more laps while in Europe the solution of the cats developed in winning way.
This brought to a gradual and progressive transformation of the Offshore competitions happened through the eighties that it brought the cats to clearly be more competitive than the mono hulls in the greatest part of the competitions disputed both in USA that in Europe.
Within middle of the nineties the end of the British Cowes Classic and of the Italian Viareggio-Bastia-Viareggio the only two true offshore events remained has also decreed the definitive disappearance of the competitions Offshore as they are been conceived in the origin in USA.
Today the competitions derived by those Offshore, as they developed in the Key West finals in November or the Class 1 in Europe and in Middle East or the P1-2 in Europe are very distant from the original concept.
They are competitions where the cats or the mono one compete however separately in competitions coastlines and also in small lakes on runs of smaller chilometrage and with a lot of turns around buoys. Practically competitions in circuit.
Concerning the definition of Classic Offshore for the boats I believe a precise date doesn't exist to which to follow or at least he has not officially been defined still.
Surely a date of beginning exist that is 1956, year when the first official race was disputed, the Miami-Nassau.
For the end I believe a period that cannot go beyond the eighties. Even if I believe that many experts would want to end with the seventies.
However as it has happened for the racing cars I believe it will be had then to create a further class that we could call Vintage Offshore for the competition boats that they have at least twenty years.
I hope to have clarify something in you and that someone explain better about the possible rules that they already exist and that they concern the first assemblies of these fascinating Classic Offshore boats.

I have visited Graz many times while working at TUG.
Certainly you don't run your boat on the Mur?
Do you keep in on the Donau in Wien possibly.
Have Bier at the Glockl Brau for me!
I will say hello to Schwarzenegger. It seems he is forgetting his German these days.

Jeff,
I thougt about flooding the Graz basin, but Schwarzenegger had no time to help me - I think he wants to become president in the USA and so you have to understand that I've no other chance than to go boating to Croatia or Italy. It's about 3 1/2 hours by car from Graz and very neat there. I never tried the Donau because I don't have the driving licence for there...
Will you come again to Graz? If so, you have to tell me. There's still enough Bier in the Glockl Brau
and many to talk about.
Best whishes,
Gerhard
