Great pics

The stern shot of Popeye's was probably from 1984. I see my friend Howard Tobeck looking right at the camera on the right with red hair. Howard was my room mate when we traveled at Arneson Racing in 1982 and won the World Champioship in Key West. He worked for The Collection in '83 for Jack Stutteville and Joey Rodrigues and went to Popeye's in '84 for Al Copelend and Bill Sirios. The 50' Popeye's wasn't delivered until 1983, I think it was the Coral Gables Challenge Cup in Sagatuck, Michigan where it made it's debut.

skrap 02-11-2009 07:29 PM

The RAMPAGE boat is Eddie Trotta (now of Thunder Cycle Designs) and Harold Grady form Rahilly Grady Engines. Harold built the engines for Bill Elswick's Long Shot, 144 when Bill won the 1980 US championship. In 1983 Tony Garcia and Keith Hazel took that Rampage boat, re-named Arneson Special with Arneson Drives to the 1983 Union of Motonautique World Championship in Key West.

TENSION 02-11-2009 09:09 PM

Is the S32 boat Terry Phillips, from Cleveland,Ohio?

TxHawk 02-11-2009 11:05 PM

Most of the photos have a date of 5/82 on the back. I cannot make out the date on the Popeyes photo. I have about 100 shots. Most of them are of the Excalibur group my dad ran with.

I Remember Howard from when I worked at Cougar, He drove the truck, Right? who was the other guy on the team (Arneson) who went on to build Jaguars for Jack, always had a pencil behind his ear, was that you?

Thanks `TxHAWK` for the 82 pics you posted. There are some of boats I have been looking for i.e. Flapjack,Stiletto,Tosti Asti. Can you tell us was the black painted Flapjack in 1982 the same one that raced in 1980 (Red/White).i`ve also added a bit of bow to your Tosti Asti shot. The things you do when it`s raining outside.

Flying, the white Flap Jack was the second 38' of Quam and then it became the first 38' for Toleman in 1980.
The dark Flap Jack was the former Copper Kettle of Satullo(first 38 built in Kevlar) and Glass. Then it became Satisfaction for Clauser. Then became the third Flap Jack 38'.In that boat lost him life Miles John during the Bacardi Trophy of 1980.

fastdonzi,

Yes, Howard did drive the Arneson truck. I was not the guy you were thinking of with the pencil. Maybe Terry Laughlin? Did you work with Peter and Steve at Cougar?

John

fastdonzi,

Here is a picture of the Arneson truck that Howard drove. I went through the south side of Chicago during rush hour traffic with Howard at the wheel, and he drove that thing like you would drive a compact car, it was amazing. The other picture is him on the 38' Cougar at the 1982 Benihana Grand Prix in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ.

Sincerely,

John

Flapjack Bertrams

Got my pics mixed up BT,again. That red/white boat should have been marked up 1979,and as you say it went on to become Toleman`s boat.
Your comment that the black boat was ex-Copper Kettle makes sense.I haven`t got a pic of Satisfaction either.
Marco, did you get my `e` mail the other day re the CUV cat info for 1999?

fobes 02-13-2009 05:44 AM

Awesome pics, love the old school stuff, please keep them coming.
Thanks: Matt

Hey Guys,

Here's a picture from the top of the truck which had an observation deck on top, and a shot of the Arneson surface drives.

John

fastdonzi 02-13-2009 07:11 AM

I think the guy I'm thinking of was Steve Mio or something like that...Does that name ring a bell?

skrap 02-13-2009 10:11 AM

fastdonzi,

Anything over 25 years ago, I'm going to need to see a picture. Sorry.

John

FF,I have just answered to your email on CUV cats.

About the Bertram Satisfaction I think to have seen it shortly in a video but I must remember in what.
However when that Bertram then it became Flap Jack it was 1980 and all the images I believe must be reported only to that year.

It's great to see that shot of Tosti Asti. That's the last Slingshot run by Peter Dean in Australia, before he moved himself and it to the States in 1982. The boat was a cracker..a self built 44 special , based around a stretched 35 Cigarette.
Peter was a multiple Australian champion and a legend of the sport here. Anyone know where the boat is now? I believe Peter owned a prop business in Georgia at some point.

Ryan Beckley 02-13-2009 06:31 PM

SlingShot / Peter Dean
He still has the boat at his shop PROPCO in Monroe Ga.

Marty,
I agree the "Outrageous" Sutphens were my all time favorite race boats.I remember they first had a 30ft Sutphen...and then the 33ft Sutphen, which became the name for that particular model.I had a picture of the beautiful tractor trailer tow vehicle and boat on the wall of my room when I was a kid.

littlenige 02-14-2009 05:59 AM

TxHawk - thanks for posting - can't wait to see the rest of them!

Anybody know if the Stiletto hull of Cervini was a cig 35' or 37.6'?

flying fish 02-14-2009 02:07 PM

Stiletto

I have it logged in as 37.5 ex-Popeyes (as on Beken Calender).See Boatmad Gallery Nige.

flying fish 02-14-2009 02:24 PM

Black Bertram

Black Tornado mentions that this raced only in 1980,but my records indicate he raced a Bertram in 1982 in Bacardi,Capstran and Spirit of Detroit before handing his active cat over to Aoki in the Benihana race. Now this throws up another can of worms. In the 1982 key west race Quam raced a Active cat called Benihana (repaired one would think). This was talked about in the Active post a while ago. This thread I thought contained photos from 1982 key west,so does that mean Quam did not race the Active cat Benihana, but the black Bertram. There was no key west race in 1980.Back to that darkened room BT.

Black Tornado 02-14-2009 03:22 PM

Immediately covered the can Flying Fish.
All it took is observing the white and red cat that appears behind the Flap Jack Bertram that has put TxHawk in the post #2 to be the Rampage. I don't know if the photo has been taken to Key West but it is of the 1982.
However Flying you have quoted the competition in Detroit 1982 with Quam on Bertram but in your post #21 in the thread -Active cats:some questions -you have said that for Detroit you have photo of Quam on the ex Kaama cat.

flying fish 02-15-2009 02:21 AM

1982 Flapjack

The ex-kaama cat was used in 82 Detroit.I hadn`t got round to amending the result sheet, which leaves Bacardi & Capstran as the Bertram races, with Key West in doubt. All these races had Rampage racing. If the pic of the Black Bertram was Key West I need to make a correction, but it looks like the Black Bertram was used in 82 as well as 1980,although I have yet to unearth a pic of it doing just that.Trouble is, to obtain this info in UK,you relied on just one U.S. magazine and the odd video to cover these events.and maybe an occasional report in a UK comic.

flying fish 02-15-2009 02:32 AM

Capstan 82

The more I look at those pics it looks very much like Capstran 82,as I have noted Rampage,Cigarette Hawk,Flapjack,The Collection,Tosti Asti all raced in the Capstran event plus the spectators in the background do not have the island in the back, and the Key West spectators mainly gathered in bunches with this island as a backdrop.

Why from the States anyone NEVER can't say something of more detailed?:traurig001:

flying fish 02-15-2009 05:31 AM

More detail please

You tell em Marco.Imagine an American posting full details of skater cats and their ex-names,I think we would have a heart attack at the shock of it,and as for Bertrams and Cigarettes,it`s just us to piece together the history by the looks of it.I think lot of it, is having the desire to log the offshore history down,as I`m sure the knowledge is out there.

I would like to know more about these too. I am in this picture, but in the womb on the bow. My mother is sitting down watching.

I am not sure that all these were Key West. They have May 1982 on the back of them. Was there a May 1982 Race in Key West?

myscarab30 02-15-2009 02:08 PM

TxHawk,

Got any 27 Excalibur race boat pics ?

However Many Thanks TxHawk for the interesting pics!
No APBA race in Key west in May I think and the location according to Flying Fish it seem not Key west for some pics.
In May 82 were two races;Bacardi Trophy and Captran.
