Marco, don't know about boat racing, but historically in Indy cars, green was very bad luck. I've heard stories that in the 50's and 60's some mechanics (that's before the became chiefs and engineers) were so superstitious that they wouldn't even use green wiring in the cars.

Another one was never set your helmet down upside down, for fear that is how it will end up on the track... On the up side, it also keeps the paint from getting chipped and scratched.

I imagine what the US mechanics they have touched in the pit lane of Indy 1963 when they are seen for the first time arrive the green(and yellow-no sponsored) Lotus of Clark.
