boats are money pits, I know this, especially twins, but when someone, a seller flat out lies to you, thats just wrong, I was planning on spending my money on other aspects of this boat and now have to dump money into drives, I may just sell the two bad ones and buy a SEI

fasttoys7619 03-12-2011 12:10 PM

1965 thunderbird 03-12-2011 12:51 PM

You might want to get a second opinion on the drives, those are pretty easy to work on and with two drives you should be able to make one. If that doesn't work put an ad on craigslist.com that you want a drive I am sure someone will have one real reasonable or look for a project boat, sometimes you can pick one up that has your drive for a couple hundred bucks.
good luck, if I was closer I would help you out.

fasttoys7619 03-12-2011 04:25 PM

so i just spent $45 in gas money to pick this spare drive up, when seller was supposed to get it for me last week, has a bad upper housing, no shaft, broke u joint and bad upper gears and bearings, who knows what else,,,,guy at marina says seller told him he knew drive was bad and said give it to me anyway, , I called seller and asked didnt you tell me drive was ready, rebuilt and ready to bolt up ? he said yes , (me)why did i get a garbage drive ? (seller)I dont know ? marina must have made a mistake.lol , (me)well are you going to make right ? he said I dont know what to tell you , ,, and ended conver like that, now im an easy going guy, very hard to get pissed , I just dont know what this world is comming to,, so many dishonest guys out there , lookin to #### people over

Velocity Vector 03-12-2011 05:16 PM

He said it was ready to bolt up he didn't say it would work after it was bolted up. There is a gray area in there. You just bite the bullet and move on brother. Alfa's are cheap you will find one. SOrry you got the shaft and the drive didn't.

Cheetah24 03-12-2011 05:51 PM

Just remember, you're not a Sucker... Someone else was very dishonest..You're like me, you still have faith in our fellow man, unfortunatly there are more dishonest people today than ever. I know right now you are simmering, but like
Velocity Vector said, Thank god it's a Alpha which are readily available & are generally priced fairly. At the end of the day, you have a Beautiful Looking Boat with Great Lines. I've always loved the looks of those Vintage Nova's.. Keep your head out of the bildge & Look towards brighter days my friend..Good Luck Buddy !

all is not lost....

http://www.boatstoreonline.com/alpha-drives.html

good stuff...in parts!

if your upper's shot...grab a lower...or vice your versa...

if you don't already run a C/R set up, you should....

you're in good hands with OSO.....

I have two right hands on the boat now, what kind of gains would i get if i did switch to c/r set up ? i know it would eliminate torque steer, but would i gain any significant speed?, more speed? , thanks ,

you wont gain any speed but it will take the lean out of the boat..

handling, both high speed and around the docks, will improve.

I disagree with fixall. If c/r drives don't improve speed, then why do all twin engine race boats run them?

c/r drives can work together to lift the boat or hold the boat in place (prop rotation). there are many aspects to consider, but generally speaking the c/r set-up is more efficient at propelling the hull forward because the drives work in conjunction with the hull and the strakes, not against it.

I saw a complete Alpha on the Richmond, VA Craigslist last week, in the Boats section.

Definitely go for the SEI, I run one of their lowers on my outboard, good piece. As for the C/R, I dunno, prolly handle better.

26MartiniMan 03-14-2011 10:27 AM

I know of a pair of c/r alfa ones are for a $1100 a piece all redone

26MartiniMan 03-14-2011 10:28 AM

if it helps

The marine told him the seller knew the drive was shot. Sounds like the guy was just a POS.

why did he take it off and bring to a marina/repair shop rather than leave both on the boat to sell? The guy knew it had issues. At least call the marina you dropped it off and ask them what the deal is and pass it on to the customer.

I don't know and don't care. If he though he was buying a turn key boat he should of done a sea trial. The fact that a sea trial could not be done is representative enough that the boat needed repairs to make it sea worthy. No sympathies, buyer should have checked it out thoroughly.

ok , hers the deal, i bought the boat with two drives on it, I knew one was bad it was locked up, seller told me he had a fresh rebuilt drive at a marina, I went to pick it up and it was trashed, I questioned the mechanic about it and he said the seller knew it was bad and told him to give it to me anyway, on the way home i called seller and asked to confirm; didnt you say the drive was rebuilt, ready to go, he said yes, then i told him the mechanic told me that Jim(the seller told him he knew it was bad and to give it anyway, once i said that the seller(Jimmy) hung up on me, and wont return my calls, lol , he is a pos !! yes i know , with boats should always do a water test, but i did hear the motors run, I did do compression tests, went through all the motor build papers, and i went through the boat hull, mechanicals, and electrical very thouroly, knowing one drive was bad, but what gets me is how someone can blatently lie like that, Dont tell me you have a good spare drive an hour and a half drive each way to get it,when in fact its a pos and wasted my day, that my friends is the story, he is a 30 year old punk P.o.S.

Is it anywhere in writing about the drive? You may have a case for court but depends on what you can prove.

tommymonza 03-15-2011 12:38 AM

Out of Curiosity what did you pay for the boat?

no unfortunately , he did not put the extra drive on the bill of sale, and I didnt even think of asking him to, he lives in the same city as i do,frequents the same bars as i do and he is a aquantance of one of my friends, I did not think that i would get screwed, especially since we live in the same area and boat and snowmobile on the Chain o Lakes,, I know every one around here and word will get out about him,

anyway, Im in good hands now, a fellow OSO contacted me, and he is rebuilding the second spare drive, it is salvageable, so hopefully this weekend i can do a quick water test, since the water levels are close to normal on the Fox River in McHenry, that is if they dont open the gates any further:drink:

Definitely will see a noticable handling difference with counter rotation drives.. not sure about a speed increase , but I feel you will see some improvement

If they are Pentas all you need is a left hand prop. The drives can be switched by flipping a lever.
