One of my neighbors had that exact boat. Same color combo. Seem to recall it had a couple of 260's for power. From my 14-year old kid perspective it was the greatest offshore machine ever!

Oh, my mistake. I ment the AD in the classifieds on OSO... Not the factory Ad.

At that time it was pretty close to the top. They were reasonably fast...60 ish...but a "Gentlemans's Performance Boat". High end finish and trim...upscale interiors and rigging.
These boats are built like a tank and ride like a cloud compared to most other boats in that class and style.

Mine is very comfortable at 45~50 in 3'~5' seas and suprises me how well it handles screwball stuff like head seas off the port or starboard quarter...it just stays on top and slices the nasty stuff up like a straight razor.

Formula's of this vintage were never intended to run flat out in the same league with Cigarettes, Hustlers, Scarabs or Fountains. They will however take you from point A to point B accross rough water very quickly, comfortably and not beat you up in the process.

Like the ad says..."Luxury Performance Cruiser".

The 402 really exudes :cool-smiley-011:
The lines are timeless....
We've seen it with cars, clothing, hair styles,... etc...It comes aroung...
Everyone is gunna be beside themselfs when Nor-tech, Cig, Outer offers a "strait bottom deep V" with mid 70's through mid 80's gelcoat graphics.. Just let the next buyers generation evolve to the "vintage" desire... It's an endless circle....

I own a 1989 Wellcraft Scarab III. Growing up as a teenager in the '80's (what a great time) I always wanted one. I love the classic boats. I can remember buying Boating magazine's write ups on the Scarab I with a Cobra drive when it was introduced. I remember on every issue the back cover mainly had a Formula advertisement, and occasionally, a Wellcraft advertisement. Great times, great boats. I wish I had a brochure for my year Scarab.

Anyway, great thread I have really enjoyed it and learned from it.

Nice thought but I dont see Outerlimits building a boat without steps as there's no need to go backwards. I do agree with the vintage appearance desire but no need to go backwards on hull design. Those 402's were huge boats and had such a long deck!!
