Thanks Sam, I think I may have done it correctly...

Try it and let me know. I do have rails on the back. I need cuddy glass, not the door, but the one on hinges above it. Also, can't find the plug anywhere in it.

I have a sneaky suspicion it has the wrong spark plugs, it smashed the ceramic on one. I can't find the exact type I should be running. More photos tomorrow!

Pretty sure youll need a ngk br6fs

That's what's in it. I read about a tapered plug somewhere. 7's. It has the GM 350 in it with the thunderbolt ignition. I would think that a 6 would be too hot given the ethanol fuel. Worse case scenario would be a valve guide adjustment seeming that it was a "fresh rebuild". They could've missed something slightly. I've got to use an easy out to get the rest of the plug out. At this point, that will be tomorrow.

The pictures look great! Now that I look at those rails, mine are longer, because mine does not have the arch....wish mine DID have an arch though.
How fast do you think you will run with the power you've got?

I could do some calculations and probably get it pretty close, however, it's late, so I'll guesstimate.

Given that the boat weighs around a 1000 according to the literature I've read, and a 28 pitch, 23' of resistance, 9'6" beam... I'd say low 40's.

Yeah, that windlass is pretty neat. I like the fact that it matches the boat and it wasn't someone's afterthought.

This weekend will be a clean and wax the hull weekend. I need to peel of the old registration numbers, and trace the radio wiring. That seems to have a intermittent working issue.

Here are the stats that I know, (taken from www.chriscraftstingers.com)

1984 230 XL Stinger
Length: 22'2" or 6.77 m
Beam: 96" or 2.44 m
Weight: 2575 lbs or 1170 kg
Fuel Capacity: 70 gals or 266 lt
Fresh Water Capacity 8 gals or 30 lt
Power Options:
1-260 hp Mercruisers 901 lbs or 409 kg

Wow, yeah I am tired. Weight of boat I meant to type 2000. I figured the powerhouse weighed about 925 or so. Still, figured it based on 2000 even though I typed 1000. :lolhit:

Now I'd go low to mid 40's.

Powerquest_Baby!! 05-14-2012 12:36 AM

I cant believe you and sam have almost identical stingers! I like the arch!

dereknkathy 05-14-2012 05:52 AM

i didn't realize sam's boat was a factory finish. i thought somebody painted stinger on the side of a 230 scorpion. which it in fact is. but if chris craft called it a stinger for a year then it is a stinger. i had 2 mid 80's 230 scorpions. same boat. one alpha, one OMC cobra. both saw right around 50 (on wishometer) when i was only one aboard in flat water.

I'm on the Great Lakes, I don't think I'd ever put it in salt water. Too many stories of destruction. If you get yours finished, we could have a stinger/boat thing at Seneca Lake.

I'm interested in seeing your progress on yours. I think that you will learn a great deal about the inner workings on it.

It's pretty neat to see one just like mine, with the exception of the windlass.

fastdonzi 05-14-2012 06:17 PM

Lets get back to the spark plugs... If your piston is hittin the plug something is really wrong, either you have some serious Domed high compression pistons or the wrong plugs (I'd guess the latter) if it hit hard enough to damage the ceramic you need to inspect the top of the piston. A valve guide adjustment isn't going to cure that.....Let us know what you find....

Of course, I wouldn't mind pulling it up for a weekend.
Just check in on my thread from time to time....I am a busy kid, so I dont always have time to come and make a whole update, but when I get the time, I will.
Have you taken any more pictures? Would love to see some cabin/engine room pictures.

InstaGator 05-14-2012 06:51 PM

Looks good KL2, I'm with PowerQuest I like the arch on that hull... Keep the pics flowing and thanks for starting this thread.

KL2 05-14-2012 07:21 PM

Nope, no more pictures yet. It's raining today. I'm not going to uncover it. It's supposed to be warmer after Wednesday and not raining. I'll open it up again on Wednesday and get into the engine a little.

The spark plug thing, it was a fresh rebuild on the top end, so I really think it's just the wrong plugs, and/or valve guide adjustment. I'm going to take a look at the top of the cylinder and see what's going on there. If the piston came up and slapped the plug, I'd assume the bottom would be crushed a little. The gap is intact. I'm convinced that the ngk bf-6 (I don't recall the entire part number) is too hot and too long. I'm going to do a compression test on it as well, just to check things out and get a baseline.

Well the rain finally stopped so I got a chance to go outside and take some pictures. Thanks Nik for getting the photos up. I am new to photo bucket, so I wasn't sure on how to link it properly. I have to learn because I took a lot more photos today.

I'm not sure if this is how you do it..

guess not

InstaGator 05-16-2012 08:19 PM

Looks like you'll have alittle work ahead of you. Since it's running you can enjoy it as you work on it. That will help you keep interested in fixing it up.

KL2 05-16-2012 08:27 PM

Yes, I know. I am going to get the treated this weekend and take out the old plywood. It's not supposed to rain now for about five days so I can get after it when I get out of work. With the lass it's too tall for the garage. Doing the work in the driveway. The vinyl, that may have to wait for a while yet. The amish need to keep it for two weeks to complete it. The lake is only 6 miles so I can take it for a couple test drives next week once I get the plugs out and changed to a plug that's not so hot. Going to do a compression test next weekend when I'll have help.

InstaGator 05-16-2012 08:34 PM

I didn't use pressure treated plywood. Instead I resin coated all the wood I replaced it keeps down the weight, PT plywood is very heavy and do you really want all that arsnic on your play toy?

KL2 05-16-2012 08:42 PM

Good point, I'm always thinking from structural engineering standpoint. I was thinking treated 2x2's for that back foundation rather than 2x6's that it currently has in places. I plan on getting the marine plywood as well. I'll have to bounce around Home Depot this weekend and see what they have for resins. I recall this fiberglass composite they had. I do have access to a dry kiln, so I can always dry out anything I need to that's currently in the boat, heck I could probably put the whole boat in the dry kiln. My dad has a lumber yard.

HTRDLNCN 05-16-2012 08:46 PM

Couple years back there was a bigger Stinger on one of our Lake Travis poker runs that had the exact same paint job.

GREAT pictures! It really gives me a better idea of how the boat should look (all put together).

"heck I could probably put the whole boat in the dry kiln. My dad has a lumber yard." i wonder if this is a service you could do for people...

Holy chit!! That thing is sweeeeeetttt!

KL2 05-17-2012 08:51 PM

Sweet! That's awesome! Yeah, I love that sound, that's why I was pretty pumped with mine. I'm very meticulous, so I'm looking forward to doing a piece by piece rebuild on mine. The fact that it's running is great as well, I can get out there for a while then fix something else. I've got a wire guru coming Memorial Day weekend, that's not my forte. I could do it, it just wouldn't function reliably.

On the dry kiln, I've honestly thought about putting it in there...

KL2 05-18-2012 08:02 PM

So I went to Walmart today, and man do I hate that place. I did get my throwable, fire extinguisher, and a 1/2'' plug The plug fits pretty snug. I was looking at the flare guns, and all they had was the pistol version. Can someone tell me if that is legal without a pistol permit? I know NY is funny (strict) about things. Of course Walmart had no idea, and they said if it was illegal that they wouldn't be able to sell it. True I guess, but still I'd like a definitive answer.

CigaretteSam 05-20-2012 09:35 PM

Any updates? It was a beautiful weekend, get out on the water yet?

drozz30 05-21-2012 05:51 AM

Flare guns are legal in NY without a pistol permit.

Doug

KL2 05-21-2012 08:47 PM

Thanks Doug for the clarity on the issue. I'll swing by WalMart tomorrow and pick one up. That's the last thing I need to be legal on the water. Boat is still registered in the guy's name I bought it from, but he said that's cool for "test driving" it. My trailer is registered to Ontario, it's going to stay that way for a while, it's over the 999# limit, so there's more hoops to jump through to get it registered in NY.

I picked up the proper plugs for it today, went to Napa. Also got some new fuses for the panel so I can do some wiring troubleshooting. Buddy had to cancel today he had an emergency road call. So he'll be down on Wednesday now to give me a hand. I got a gator grip too, which is exclusively for the boat. It's been thunder-storming here all day, so no boat work today.

I couldn't do anything on the boat on Sunday, had to pick up the car, blew a brake line. I don't have all of the tools necessary to do the job anymore. Yesterday, I did manage to fix some screws on it, and check the plug for snugness. I noticed that where the plug goes into the plastic, the silicone looks a little rough so I'm going to recaulk it. I wanted to fire it up tonight then upload a video, however, not in the lightening. Don't worry, Wednesday I plan on taking a video of the engine running with the new plugs in it. :drink:

Sam- how's your project going? I had a chance to read your thread a little over the weekend, and if I recall correctly, you're looking at engines?

Yeah, getting a 350sbc :)

Thanks for the compliments. we have had it on the water twice now. Trials and tribulations. had a water leak on a riser hose, power steering leak, elec. problem with the trim pump, now bow light, had to go to a colder spark plug, etc. all-in all its doing pretty good, dusted a big block 21 scorpion Last Sunday and had throttle left over( still trying to break-in and tune) projects take a while, keep the faith

What did you end up with for a plug? That was my suspicion about my CC blowing up the plug, too hot. I got a 9 equivalent now, trying them tomorrow.
I went to Napa and asked them for a 1984 350 chev plug, didn't tell them it was for a boat.

doggiedave 05-23-2012 09:41 AM

I'm running an AC R42TS plug for your app I would run either a 44 or 43 depending on your compression ratio( higher comp would be the colder plug)

What plug did you end up with? A boat needs different plugs than a car...Heat range is really important. You dont want one that runs too cold.

I put 9's in it. Fired it up tonight, it runs like a champ. My mechanic buddy came over and checked it all over. He concurs with what I thought, all goof. The original marine plug was in one of the plug holes. He suggested that I get a hei to get rid of the points. I said good point, going to look into that. Checked all the necessary things, out drive fluid, oil, power steering, all good. I have a video, I don't know how to upload video though. I'm pretty pumped, going out on the lake on Sat. weather permitting. They're calling for a 30% chance of rain all weekend now.
