Sorry about the hijack, POWER IS FROM 350cu, 300hp Chevy's & Volvo drives. This Donzi was raced back in 1974 here on Lake St Clair.

That's incredible, small world, especially around these boats. I once posted a picture of a '79 Starfire and got talking with the current owner - the boat is still totally original, including the 8 track!!!

Why the interest in Lil Rhino? Is it being restored??

Lil Rhino the Magnum was lost in the Emerald City Harbor Fire around 1975 along with Ken's & Sandy's 28' Bertram Baron Killer. Ken's Mirage became many race boats after her sold it in 1981. Kenny's Jack Roush Ford race engines went into Jerry Girschners Active cat Blue Max ,, the hull became SHOCK WAVE & FINISH LINE,, today ?????

I'll have to look as I know I have a bunch of Ken and I going head to head. We raced against each other for years. Inferno vs Lil Rhino.

From what I was told the Rhino and Wolverine ( Mirages) were produced at the same time.

Both were Kevlar and very light and strong for the day.

I was told the Kevlar Wolverine was scraped after Pete made the jump to open class as it was beyond repair.

As you said earlier Ken's went on the race into the 90's....was that the same boat or did Black have more than one Mirage over the years?

Kevlar ,,, I dont think so, Joe to early 1976, but was built late 1975. They were hulls # 1 & 2, & # 3 was the La Salle thats still here on the Lake St Clair, OSO member [justbassing] has it & it's a very heavy polyester lay up. My first Mirage was a 1976 that Bob Johson [Eagel trailer] bought new & raced, again heavy polyester glass lay up.
Klym killed the Wolverine Mirage, :picard1::picard1::picard1: tried to stretch it to pull a mold off it & broke it beyond repair. Kenny Black only had one Mirage he sold to Gerry Girschner who only raced it a few time with Red Crain. Jerry stripped it for the powertrain to use in his Active cat Blue Max.

Mark,

I always love to hear the real scoop from you.

Regarding the attempted mold do you kow how big a boat he was trying for?

Btw do you know what effect good or bad the big WB tabs made on that hull?

Last question I promise.

Joe,,, Klym wanted around a 31' hull to complement his 27' Magnum copies. He found it in the 31 CC Excalibubr, thats what he took a mold off of with a few deck changes.. :party-smiley-004: My Friend Terry had the LaSalle Mirage back in the 80's with the big WB tabs, I remember him using them a little to much on time & she stuffed. Some said the big tabs worked to good.:eek::eek:

Good to know. I think we are going to put them on this winter anyway.......then practice extreme caution when dropping them down.

The boat is owned by one of the owners of South River Marine in Harrison Twp.

It's in original condition and I think Jerry is planning on running it next year as soon as he is done with some engine work.

It's ruff Joe the bottom was blistered bad the last time I saw it. The owner before Jerry kept it in the water at Millers. That guy came to the first reunion with it, he had electrical issues with it & had to be jumped started. After that I think he just let it sit in the well all summer, when Chip pulled it was lumpy. Before that summer that owner put a lot of money in it repainting the name & numbers on her.
I believe the original owner was Wally Harper [Lil Smidgen] he sold it to Lee Bomar. here are some pic's from that reunion, from the waterline up she looked great. I'm sure Jerry cleaned up the electrical problems but the gel on the bottom was tuff.

I don't disagree with you. She needs some TLC for sure. However Jerry has the skills and resources to make it really nice should he decide to.

Like you I'm a fan of all the old stuff and the people like us who see them as still cool enough to keep around.

So I'm pulling for him to make it nice again.

h2oboater , If Lil Rhino , Wolverine and La Salle were 1,2 & 3 , how is it that I have # 001 (CDB290010276) ? It looks to be the boat that is beached in pictured in the brochure posted above . Note the high lifeline and no handrail around the windshield (the only one I have seen made like this )

Maybe those 3 were the 1st staggered engine boats Cortes made but not the 1st 9mss.

Yes I did. But not at that price. ;)

I stopped and checked out the boat last summer. I do believe it’s one of the first 9 meters. The windshield is completely different from any other one I’ve ever seen. But definitely a factory item. You local to the area?

Not that I have seen. It will be getting a good make over before it goes. I have all ready got the mechanical and electric's up to par. Working on the side windshield glasses now and putting new rubber glazing in all of it (that was hard to find) . In the spring it will be getting a new paint job and carpet.

If the hull #'s mean what I have seen on another post it is the 1st one built.
