Found an original Signature built by Tommy Adams. He was the person who got himself shot because he crossed someone.
He drove Miss America P-71... which is a copy of a Magnum just with a different deck...we think this was his display boat, based on photos from the Cigarette factory.Needs stringer and bulkhead work,no engines or drives $8,000/best offer Bud

Can't believe it is still around. Nice looking boat! You think that's the same boat from the factory in '79?

Unbelievable! Here's a better copy of the pictures, your absolutely right......looking at the paint job......

gbochis 01-12-2013 05:15 PM

Signature boats always had very advanced color work for their day. I spent a lot of time at the factory as a kid. That paint scheme was reffered to as the cottonmouth at the shop, not sure why? A number of 27 left with that paint scheme, as well as a ton of red, white, and blue boats.

Spoke to him yesterday, I think he's looking forward to getting some time working on his boat. Mind you, with the weather the way it is here at the moment, it sounds pretty appealing to me too!!!!

Best wishes........

The 27 ft Signature will need new upholstery, rear bulkhead and possibly a floor, need to spend a little more time with it. It had 468's and TRS Drives, and ran just under 80 MPH.it comes with a clear title.and no trailer,If you are going to pull it yourself we can put it on and inexpensive one just for hauling. It came out of a Marina in the Everglades, brought to IL.in 93 and has been sitting for almost 15 years.Let 's keep in touch if you are interested. Bud

gttdnbman 01-15-2013 09:15 AM

So I have had my 27 super custom for 3 years and have been bummed at the lack of other Signatures and information out there. I think I have seen one with an outboard bracket on the east coast, Ridefast has one and I think I have seen two or three on Craigslist. Mine is titled as a 91 and has a FLZ Hin # (Which doesnt fit in the time line) any idea on how many hulls were made? Bud I would love to see more pictures of the cabin or any other information you may have, Thanks Bman

Lee 01-15-2013 10:33 AM

Just curious as to what caused the price increase from $2000 to $8000 within 3 months? even the exact same picture is being used.

1. I have no Idea why it was published by Bob for $2,000... had to be a mistake. I will speak with him.
2. It has been reported that 90-95 were built. If your's is 91 it was one of the last ones to be built. FLZ HIN # would have been issued by the State of Florida because Tommy was dead at that time.
3.Anyone have any info post it.
Bud

Other Tommy Adams boats

Tommy Adams also built 27's,32's and a 38....which was a dog per some old timers. Any one have any pictures on the last two ??? Bud

Fast Shafts 01-15-2013 03:35 PM

The "Liquidator" in post 17 was a single engine raceboat, I never remember it being competative. Is it still around? I'm sure with today's power it would be a good ride. I think it had a "Sternpowr" drive.

Bud here you go.

MidOcean 01-16-2013 07:03 AM

A testament to the signature hull. The 28 and 31' Seahawks both came from the signature with an added - wider chine that required a two part mold.

gbochis 01-16-2013 08:25 AM

Tommy did a lot of creative boats / projects. I can't find the picture, but I remember he built a 38 with an enclosed canpopy called "Chief" well before anyone else (It was more for extending the boating season than safety). He buit a 24 footer that he decided not to produce. Told the shop guys to get rid of the mold and then that somehow became the Carrera "Brute 24". He built a set of lower units that were extra short in 1976 (like Merc Black Hawks) but the 38 was prone to spin with them so it did not go much further. He also built a bunch of boats with stock power and super size fuel tanks for the "midight running crowd" The grey 38 in the Mid Ocean photo had stock Merc Power and 700 Gallons of fuel capacity. I am sure that aspect of the company untimately contributed to the lead poisoning he died from. After his death molds wound up all over. Excalibur built some 38's, so did Pantera. Renegade built a 28 and 31 (I think they still build the some version of it) He had a 70 mold under construction that became Infinity Yachts. The list goes on. You can see the styling in many future generations. The funiest thing about Tommy was how he loved to stick it to Don. The Signature plant was in the building next to Cigarette on 188th. On the side of the building that faced The Cigarette plant Tommy had a huge mural painted that said "If you like what you just saw at Cigeratte, come on over you will LOVE Signature."

It would be great if some one had a photo of that wall. I understand that with the wider chines, the boat rode higher which allowed for greater carrying capacity. Bud

Fast Shafts 01-16-2013 09:46 AM

Didn't the 27' come from a Magnum 27 splash-with some minor changes to the chine? The 27 race version was much more succcessful than its other models. The Following were 27' raceboat: Crazy Greek (my favorite as a kid) Lady L, Adios Gringo, Aft R U Too, and Liquidator.
Mr. Vinyl; I have a picture of that wall, but dont have a scanner-I'd love to post it.

This was the first one, it had Toms Miss Americas Magnum sport hull. When Tom came to the St Clair River Crab race in 1976 I ask Tom why it had a Magnum Hull #, :party-smiley-004: he turned and walked away. :picard1::picard1:
This a very cool boat with Volvo E drives & small blocks, & headers with the side outlet exhaust..

salty dog 01-16-2013 10:54 AM

The Seahawk needed the wider chine for sure a much greater carrying capacity.

lots of great info here i was going to redo mine but i just went ahead and get a 28 sonic, the guy who has the lady-L his name is john he lives about 45mins away from me in willmington, i have been wanting to go check it out he is rebuilding it. mine was built for a guy in NJ that owed a car lot. I talked to hem a couple years ago, he gave me the 411 on it ,had a custom paint job with penguins on the side ...Dont ask me i dont know lol, had twin 454 with trs. He sold it to the riddler brothers in VA beach VA. they raced it in the 90's it was call the riddler. does anyone know how many 27 were made? i was told it was a low #? then the guy they sold it to destroyed it, So i got it and parted it out, still have the hull and trailer.

Fast Shafts 01-16-2013 12:10 PM

Ridefast,
Is that your boat on Craigslist? What repairs does the hull need? I heard a rumor that boat sailed down a highway without it's trailer? Is that true?

Is it on CL now? NO, where did you see it? post a link. mine has no hull damage just needs some paint, its still in primer, a buddy of mine wants to cut the deck off and make a CC out of it. This is what it looks like now.

Fast Shafts 01-16-2013 12:56 PM

Ridefast,
On January 6th a 27 Hustler/Signature hull was listed for sale for $1,500 on Charlotte North Carolina Craigslist. I thought this may have been yours. I guess its not. It is located in Wrightsville Beach. Hard to believe there are two 27 Signature race hulls for sale. Thanks for clearing up the confusion. Maybe this is the old "Lady L"...its blue??

It was originally green tommy was building it for a customer that backed out of the sell. then tommy gave tony a really good deal on it and painted it blue and white and made it a race boat, the only thing is the boat has never been titled and there is no HIN # and no title. it left tommy adams and went to new york to just be a race boat and then then guy that has it now get it from Tony and pete but with no title.
