Charlie---sorry I missed that. I have been trying to get Doc to go to the reunion. Maybe next year I can shame him to come in his new fractional??
The Switzer brothers were about 30 years ahead of the time-----the boats DID fly---- http://i57.tinypic.com/2cd7i1c.jpg I heard the RPM's were over 10,000 on some of those setups. Even if they weren't, we believed the rumor anyway. That would be great if you could get Magoon to come next year to OFF, but if he can't I hope you come again. This gives you plenty of time to plan for it. And you can take some of the time from Doc's fractional for the trip. |

Those stacker exhausts were deafening to anyone who was being passed.....and a lot of boats were being passed by them.

Hi Richie----my newest hearing aids cost over $7,000!! That is more than Bob got for a set of side pipes. But the engines you built for me while you were doing time at Oshkosh were probably louder---and a higher frequency----42,000 exhaust pulses per minute!! On each side!!!
Little known fact: Richie was building these engines after he left Lake X; Charlie, they just sounded like 10,000!!! -actually 7 to 8,000; we used swiitch boxes with 7,000 limiters in the long races http://i57.tinypic.com/2rqozmx.jpg |
Stan Irwin sounds like quite a guy, that sure is a good looking motor in your avatar Charlie. I'm guessing it's a 496ci -- circa 650 hp?? So was he an independant engine builder, or did he work for Kiekhaefer doing the serious race stuff?

Ask Mike about this rod? The early KAM engines were using Carillos---back in 68--69 Wayne Meyer was building race 482s at the boathouse using these BIG HEAVY rods. Maybe from Vincenzo's 28' Magnum??
Wayne had a bright young mechanic working for him named Keith --- http://i59.tinypic.com/2hgs082.jpg I haven't had a chance to speak with Mike yet but they are deffornatly not the rods out of Vincenzo's 28' Magnum, that's these ones below......pretty sure they weren't marked as Keikhaefer, I'm out to night with my old man, I'll ask him. The only other motors they could be out of are the ones from the boat below......pretty sure they're from Martin though. Dry Martini and her engines were seperated from each other at the end of the 1974 season and were not reunited until the early 2000's, I think. Charlie has a great article about it on the HORBA website......http://www.historicraceboats.com/drymartini.htm |

From last year's build
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...nname/1-13.jpg The second set should be here tomorrow. Ya, I said second set. Found them online in the mid west about a year ago (part #'s make life easy). Been working on the guy ever since and he gave them up last week and according to tracking they should be here tomorrow. Did I mention I picked up a 427 tall block last week also? Building a clone 482 (really a 496 because boring the cylinders) to match the last one so I can dump both in the Nova. Also from what I understand the Nova 24 was made from a 7 meter Donzi hull and a Cary deck. The 7 meter not being long enough and the Cary deck being to big there was some saws involved. |

Affirmative to all of that. Stan was a member of the Greatest Generation; Stan was on the Yorktown when she was sunk in the Battle of Midway----
http://i62.tinypic.com/a3fos5.jpg I spoke to my old man about the rods in the 28' Magnum motors..........he reckons they were just like the Keikhaefer ones of Mike's but were not marked as Kiekhaefer. I wondered if Corello did A beam rods back then that looked similar.......probably not?? |
From what I understand Keikhaefer offered "build kits" to a few. That's why I found the rods I did in the mid-west that have never been used. I've also seen a few parts with the name ground off. I figure these were parts for racers that were not under the Keikhaefer banner and maybe shouldn't be using the competitions parts but when you need the best at the time you take their parts, alter them (by grinding the name off) and call them your own. .

So Gene, how did you get involved with Doc Magoon and the KAM boats? Were you working for Stan Irwin?
