A very cool pic

The combination of high winds and the angle the pic was taken makes it look like the boat is a mile in the air.but if you zoom in on it you will see it was probably a moderate speed launch with not to much air

Nice theory! As stated the shot was from the KW race in 1974, in the boat is Jack Stuteville throttles and Sammy James driving. It was the factory entry from Bertram and it was a 38 foot boat. The location of the photo was just off Rebecca Shoals which adds to the history. On that date, a US Geodesic Survey vessel was working, in the log book for that date was the following statement. "Sea conditions at Rebecca Shoals today, wave height up to 18 feet, winds, gusting to 35 MPH."

Sammy said it was either this jump or one close to it that cracked the hull on re-entry. Everytime they took off again he could see daylight if he looked down at his feet. They had a bit of a disagreement in the cockpit as Jack was a bit concerned and Sammy thought the best plan was to keep going as lomg as they could. They won the race and pulled into the dock to greet the Governor of Florida etc and get the trophy. As the ceremony went on, Sammy said one of his land crew guys came up and told him to get the Governor and others off the boat as it was sinking. The crew brought the boat quickly back to the trailer and pulled it out and pumped it out.

I remember asking .....What happened to the boat? Sammy laughed and said.....Whenever I broke a boat, I called Preston and he would buy it and fix it up and race it! Preston liked good deals.

HORBA has the complete photo library of Ron Thibedeau and one of the photos is this one. I am trying to find a way to convert Hasselblad 4X4 negatives to a scan and then I can publish this along with many other amazing photos that Ron took in the years he covered the sport.

I know I posted this before....... but this is my favorite photo of Betty.

See the wake, out in front of her? That is me ......she and the rest of the fleet were trying to catch me.
AJAC HAWK was second, but Betty came home third. Bushmills 1979, California.

Tell these stories please. I've had a few friends go lately. Life will fly by before you know it.

Thank you in advance for the knowledge and history.

With all due respect Charlie got to call BS on 18 footers in 35 mph winds around Rebecca Shoals .. Been around them many times in many conditions .

Tell me how fast you can run headon into a 18 foot swell much less a wind driven 18 foot wave being tripped with a 7 knot oppossing current.?

Still one of the top 10 pics from back in the day though.
