That's gotta be rare. Very cool.

Help me out here but if that was properly restored, would it be worth big bucks or is it just another boat with classic appeal to powerboat fans? I.E. Sentimental value and pride of ownership.

there were made only 11 of them with the inboards if i am right, high value in my opinion ,if i did not have the banana i would go for it.
it doesn't become more classic then this !

----There have been many guesses as to how many 28 Barons were built. I have been following them since 1970 when a friend who lived near me on Cape Cod got a brand new one, and I can say with conviction that there were more than eleven Barons built. I know of more than eleven that I can count right now. Not that the #s are high. Probably more like 25 or so, and that's not counting any of the ones supposedly sent overseas. If I wasn't knee deep in projects I would be making a call right now about this one.......Bill S

Back in the mid 70's there were 4 of these Barons on lake St Clair, The Grinder, Super Moth, Killer & Sitting Duck,, again just on our lake alone. Last year @ the OFF reunion @ Lake Dora I talked to Sammy James about the 28' Barons as he worked at Bertram back then & said around 30 were made. Here are some pic's of Bertrams that I have pic's of. There also was a company called Outlaw Marine [white hull] that made a knock off Baron here is a pic of it. Olredalert & I found & bought the Super Moth Baron a few years ago, but we knew the right thing to do was returned it back to the family that raced it in the 70's, it's now in restoration. They are a very cool classic worth restoring.

Cool boat. Not worth 12 grand.

Fast Shafts 11-12-2015 01:39 PM

I think 38Banana is getting the 38' Raceboats mixed up with the Barons. I believe only 11 38' Raceboats were built.

The Killer Bertram was Sandy Black's pink race boat, but it was Phil Lewis's original NEEDLE NOSE Bertram. Unfortunately the Killer Bertram & many Magnums were lost in the fire @ Emerald City Harbor around 1975

Here are a few more photos of the 28 Bertram - before and after it was sold to Ken Black for his wife Sandy, and painted Pink and renamed KILLER !

The sitten duck 2 sat on 9 mile in a back yard for years,my friend bought it and restored it,,,i would have bought it but i had a 27 mag sport,ha,46 yrs later i have another 27 sport, hmmmmm

B38 03-10-2016 09:06 PM

Hello all. Wannabe dude what's up. There where 12 - 15 B38s built, and 6 or 7 of the sport version with port windows and galley entrance. I have only two photos of the sport version that nobody seems to know about.
same deck and hull but 5 seater. My hull is #7, all glass layup like the Goodwrench boat. Don Onkin stated all Kevlar 44 hulls had issues, so he went back the the glass hull and had best luck with it. No delamination issues do to dry layup. Mine weighs 8,214 Lbs wet, no core under deck so light layup. NNIII is strong as ever and sleeping in garage ready for next event. who hoo. And yes Galen @ speedmasters still has his 28 Beron complete. he owned it more than 30 years. and yes it is for sale. #2 mercruiser drives small blocks.

Right you are Bill it's a 38' Excalibur that's been stripped & left uncovered for years. You would have to be mad @ your money to start that restoration project.

B38 03-12-2016 11:31 AM

I stand corrected. Galen states Volvo drives modified for racing.

That is just such a Classic picture of the Good Old Days.

Always thought that was Soo Cool putting the Blue tinted glass in the windshield frame.

lucky strike 03-12-2016 01:10 PM

That 28 Cig. was gorgeous

lucky strike 03-13-2016 12:10 PM

That windshield came with the boat when it was new. The boat is a 1976..... Red,White & Blue.
