I would rebuild the cylinder first. That is the weakest link in the system. See very few helms go bad. Love your Maltese-wish I still had mine.

Thank you guys. Working on it this weekend, I'll post the progress! My bet is in the relief valves.

Hi Jeff, sounds like piston seal.
If they are the cylinders with the two aluminum tie rods, I have the seals if you can't find them.

Agreed, rebuild cylinder with seal kit. $50.00 per cylinder. Mind numbing to rebuild with just a vise.

Thanks guys. Tore cylinder apart and there was only two o-rings to be replaced! Weren't things great in 1973!? Put it back together no luck. Cylinder still moved on its own. Next was the relief valve mounted in the engine bay. This is the one everyone says not to tear apart. Tore it apart! LOL! Again not much too it, so don't be scared of this one either. Took both relief valves out, and blew out with air then re-assembled.
So far so good. Drives have not moved since Sunday. Got our fingers crossed.

Guys,

Turns out it was the helm seal leaking after all. Rebuilt it and all is good. So silver lining is I now know how to rebuild the cylinder, the relief valve and the Helm! That just about makes the whole boat that I have rebuilt/repaired over the last 35 years!

So if you find your helm drifting or out drives turning on you when in the rack or on the trailer check the helm seal for leaks!

Thanks again for all the input.
