Back on the water after many years
I'm back in the boating community after probably 10 years, (fishing boat not included)
I just bought a 30' Century Ultra 3, I have no idea about the history regarding this manufacturer The only reason I bought it was the engines and a nice trailer! Twin 454's with 177 blowers, roller rockers, flat tappet cam, dished pistons that's all I know about the engines plus they were originally built by Innovation Marine Drives appear to be SSM#3 but I'm not sure. They are 1 3/4 shaft with 19 spline Upon water test, initial planning was difficult. Really bad cavitation out of the hole Slight cavitation in hard turn on the outside engine but not a big deal Really stable at speed Ran 70mph GPS 4800RPM no trim with tabs flat I'm going to measure the X dimension and try to get gear ratio tonight Any help would be appreciated Thank youhttps://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...dda3f65d20.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...5543075010.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...31206d62e.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...7981b2cb9a.jpg |
Welcome back and good luck with the Century. Those motors should produce some nice power.
|
Those drives look like a SSM 2 to me.
Have fun!! :coolcowboy: |
Yup, TRS upper #2 lower. 2" deeper than a TRS and parts are hard to find. Have a friend that has them on a Chris Cat.
Those engines are mounted pretty high. Should be a fun ride with those engines. |
Thank you
I'm pretty sure these are III's, I haven't seen many pics of 2's 9 1/2" from shaft to cav plate That picture didn't frame them well Yes they are high, shaft is 5" below running surface Did some maintenance last night, it will be out this weekend, Am I missing something regarding engaging the transmission, I put it in gear but it didn't engage. Does it need to be running? I want to figure out the gear ratio, I think I'm missing a bunch of speed with these props https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...024f27e654.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...7ac7d7ae5a.jpg |

Whew! Thanks I was a little concerned!

Got it out this weekend,The OPP launched the same time as I did. Before I fired it, I tested the mufflers and they closed but wouldn't stay shut so I had to zip tie them in the quiet position, it worked because they didn't hassle me.
It took a bit to figure how to plane. Need to work on technique a bit, back off the throttles just before they lose traction wait for the wave to catch up and pin it! Too rough to get any testing numbers but it does fly well! Once it warmed up on Sundays run it started backfiring through the carb at cruise, found a carburetor stud loose (stripped out of the supercharger). Waiting for gaskets should be back out Thursday and try again |
I forgot how much fun learning about someones old stuff was! (maybe a little sarcasm)
The stbd engine that gave me trouble last week is good to go, but now the port is backfiring through the carb. Pulled it off and cleaned it. Nothing obvious but lots of small debris, back together Thurs and try again. It's been too rough to get any solid performance numbers, hit 75mph in 2' messy chop on the weekend. It needs some holy $#!^ handles for the passengers! Currently has nothing |
Change those steering hoses before you blow one out. Have fun with your new ride.

Good observation!
I did that before launching Thank you! |
Sweet....

Looks like on the trailer for a couple of weeks. Lobe on exhaust valve is now flat, noticed it rattling so pulled it apart to check and lash if needed found terminal damage. I considered just putting a new cam in it, flushing the oil and hoping to get the season out of it before catastrophic failure but decided on fixing it correctly.
