Was at the Cobalt factory in December and some of the 'ol timers told stories of the "bubble decks", as they referred to them.

The old timer that I bought the boat from said that the motor had been blueprinted and balanced. Said it was a 351. The motor says Hollman Moody on it. It does have through hull pipes. He claimed it went over 70 mph. (That seems like it may be a fish story) Said that he put the boat in storage when his grandson turned 16 because he didn't want him to get hurt with it. He said that he bought it from his best friend that bought it brand new. And that it has very low hours on it.

For now the motor didn't turn over when I cranked it. So I pulled the plugs and put some mystery oil in each hole in hopes of letting that penetrate for a few weeks / months (It's freaking cold here in KY till March). Then I hope to be able to turn it over.

Thinking that this dude may fit on a large floating pwc style dock next to my main boat. The lights, gauges, steering and trim tabs all work. I'm considering installing a foot pedal throttle system on it. The trim tabs buttons are on the dash so it would be easier to control if I could keep one hand on the wheel while the other sets the trim and control the throttle with my foot.

All in all I think it's one very cool little toy. I'm pretty excited to see how she runs. :)

"Bubble Decks" referred to the rounded deck of the XV-200 (what you have) and a larger GT-500 (18 footer) that was a splashed copy of the Donzi Corsican.

You may be better off to just pull the motor & have someone go through it. Otherwise, it may do more damage trying to get it started in the boat.

These boats are light. 70 mph, albeit a major handful, may not be out of the question.

Why bother pulling the motor if I can get it unstuck while it is in the boat? Seems like there is plenty of room to work around the motor without having to remove it.

And what do you know about Holman Moody motors? When I look at their web site it seems that all they really got into were NASCAR applications. What would differentiate this Holman Moody 351 from a stock 351 Windsor?

I have a foot throttle on my Cig20 and love it! Makes steering, trimming, and throttling much easier.

Leaving the engine in is fine. For me, knowing my luck, I'd be more worried about some system not being 100%, i.e. oil pump, water pump, etc. Just a thought.

I know nothing about the Holman Moody engines; just that Cobalt used them in some of their early builds due to their performance upgrade.

Holman Moody built several marine engines from what I've seen, a guy found a pair of boss 9's in a barn a couple years ago. they seem to be all ford's

What a piece of history. Never knew these were ever made. Had a 1969 Donzi Sweet 16 back in the early 90's. Had a stock 302 Ford hocked up to a Volvo 200 drive. Was told it was originally owned by a Donzi employee and raced at some time. Original motor was a 289 Holman Moody with twin 4 barrels on a high rise intake , 8 straight pipe exhaust pipes and a speedmaster bottom end on the drive.

Sorry to bring up an old post... the v drive boat was bought by a guy in North Overland Park KS. Out of storage and from the story I got it was on a small lake on the Missouri side of KC. Remember looking at it at a house off Metcalf… Was a cool boat with a lot of cool history. Was one of the last boats built at the Chanute plant and was finished in the garage after the doors were locked at the plant. I was trying to play the waiting game and really didn’t have the money at the time and went back a week later and he said he sold it to a collector in Canada… Sure would like to know where that boat is now. Had a 351C and thought to be a 1 of 1 build.

Watched the movie Ford vs Ferrari last night. My favorite part was when he was passing on the bank and they said "Who built that motor?" "Hollman and Moody!". I love the fact that I have a part of history. Does anyone know more about the history of this boat? Heard something about a fight breaking out at the Miami Boat show between Donzi and Cobalt ending in a lawsuit! Heard rumors that Donzi grabbed a hammer and bashed the haul of the XV-200. Apparently the XV200 has an identical haul to the Sweet 16 but a bigger and faster motor. The suit required Cobalt to destroy all of the XV200's. And that only a handful of them got about. Any of you oldtimers ( ;) ) recall anything about this?

Looks like I am losing my storage and I no longer have room for this boat. How much do you think would be a reasonable asking price? It has extremely low hours. A professionally built stock carb. Needs valves adjusted. Located in the state of Kentucky.
