BOATING ON A BUDGET

Give Rich Sutphen Jr. a call for a quote.

Who better to repair, restore or rig your boat, than a company that knows how to build them.

FX10,
I have a 1998 Active Thunder 25' Tantrum. I have been playing with some prop work to try to dial out the porpoising that I have with my boat.
When My boat was originally built for some one else it was built for F1 racing so I'm not sure what was done to the hull.
Could you educate me a little on what I would have to do to reduce my porpoising or eliminate it with out loosing any speed if that is possible?
Thanks in advance,
Mike

Mike,
This is a tough call. You said you were dialing in with props. Some props give bow lift, others give stern lift. Keep trying props first before you even think about any bottom work. I haven't seen your boat run, so it's hard for me to make a call on this one.
If you exhaust all your options with the props, then your looking at adding a " SLIGHT " hook to the bottom. Baja had a problem with a few models, I think the 27 or 29. A hook was added to help with the proposing.
I'm talking minimal to start with. Say 3/32' to 1/8" at the transom, fairing in around 2' from the stern. That is a minimal hook, and it shouldn't really hurt your speed.
Hope this helped.

Rick

Hey Rick,
Thanks for the feed back. On my 25' there is a difference in the hull from the passenger side which shows some hook to the driver that doesn't. The prop work is all been just about exhausted.
Do you have a number that I can contact you?
If you don't mind I would like to pick your brain a little bit.

Thanks
Mike

Hey Mike...I think the one Smith Bros was bigger than the other...and he was on the throttles!! This was supposed to be a funny remark but I do beleive that this is true. Now if they put more of a hook in the port side to alleviate the weight difference....that would be extreme!! You have to make it down to the Chesapeake this year........I need to run with another true 25ft. wave crusher!!! I'm tired of looking back and waiting for people to catch up!!!

R Addiction,
The port side is the side that haves the hook and the starboard side has none. The hook is 1/8" to 3/16". How much do you know about it when the Smith Bro owned it?
It would be nice to be able to talk to them to discuss the boat when they owned it. Them being the original owners I would think they could tell me all that they did if any thing to the hull.
Rsteiny hounds me to go boating with him and I to this date haven't made a trip with him. It always seems that other priorities take over. I'm going to have to bit the bullet and get it out more and enjoy it.
I would really like to get this porpoising dialed out of my boat so my wife doesn't get tired of getting beat up. That would make it more enjoyable.
