Started glassing the transom together today. I couldnt find a flat spot on the floor so i had to make one with a couple of angles some box tubing and another sheet of plywood.

Got one layer laied up for today. The one thing i forgot to do was wax the board that the transom is laying on...that should be fun to remove later..

Read the first part "flat spot on the floor....... had to make one" and I'm thinking the floor of the boat? Make a flat spot........? Read it about 5 times before skipping to the photos and the second part, then it all made sense!! It's early morning here and I had a few drinks last night, my brain is still in neutral. :)

Ok the transom is in! Clamped it with 2x4s and some angle iron. Then I let it set for a couple of days and unclamped it and smoothed out the transitions around the edges.

your over the hump now, setting the transom is many times the most critical and tricky for a first timer. Its also the most intimidating when the clock is ticking on a batch of core bond. Looks good.

Well the transom is mostly in... I have one more strip of tabbing to go on the top and some 1.5oz cloth for a finishing layer.

I just relized that the picks didnt show up on yesterdays and post 10 is their a time limit to go back and edit?

I have a Question about doing the stringers.... do they need to be equal strength? Only one of my stringers is bad and i don't want to do more work than necessary but ...The stringers are made from 1 1/8 plywood their about 11" tall with another piece about 6"stapled to the side with and other piece stapled to the top. Here is the back side with the 6"

And this is the end of the stringer where attaches to the transom. The flat bottom piece of ply runs on down to the floor on the rest of the stringer and the square on the side was part of the motor mount that wont be their when I'm im done

So if i make a 1 1/8 stringer out of a piece of 1/2 and 3/4 glued together with glass and resin Im thinking its going to be much stronger than the other side. Especially with useing vinyl instead of poly to put it in. Is that going to matter? Will it cause some unwanted flexing or stressing of the other side if they dont move the same when crushing waves?

I would have to say that it does matter. That grid and the materials its made from also act as a bit of a shock absorber. Boats flex relates to its ride characteristics so you will definitely want it to be uniform.


Also don't be affraid of re engineering any part of this, most production built boats have plenty of room for improvement. And for simplicity sake I would do stringers in two layers of half but certainly nothing wrong with mixing thicknesses.
