How bad is this crack?
Gonna be a bit hard to answer but what do you guys think of this?
It’s below the transom on an older 19’ outboard ski boat, full project, will likely need new floor and transom. I’d like to think the crack isn’t too serious. I’m going by the photo alone, won’t get to see the boat. Any thoughts appreciated. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...640010948.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...ca32992ee9.png RR |
RR, I cant comment on the cracks your asking about. But I would certainty have some concern with the big oval hole in the transom.

That's a very strange crack especially considering it's in a part of the boat that is very tough. And to add to it , it doesn't seem to have taken a whack or hit anything as there's no other visible damage.
But on the bright side , if the boat needs a new floor and transom it's a small addition to the job ! edit to add : By any chance is this a cored hull ? , |
Seems to be pretty significant...bottom of boat and up the transom. Certainly more than just a gelcoat crack I think. That roller trailer hasn't helped, probably...
But yeah, everything is 'fixable'. Just depends on if it's worth it. |
I'm no glass expert but that looks pretty dam serious to me. It's amazing what salt water does to a trailer too!

Thank you all for the replies.
That oval shaped hole is for the notch ventilation. There’s another one on the bottom of the notch, I think they’re connected. There’s another crack on the inside, I’m waiting on pics. Trailer is in poor shape, maybe repairable, maybe junk. Seller has been very honest and up front, hopefully see more pics and will post here for advice, you guys know more than I do. RR. |
So you know what I’m looking at, it’s an Australian built Haines Signature 1900s. Designed and built by John Haines, an Aussie legend who designed, built and raced his own boats. The 1900s was built from ‘89-‘02. Never a lot for sale, figure if I buy an old one that needs love, I could have it rebuilt here in Thailand at local rates and follow the whole rebuild, have it done exactly as I want it.
Couple of pics, they did build a few for racing and another that as beautifully rebuilt. (Pics from the web) https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...88dcf1d45.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...45cb232db.jpeg RR. |
Rak, my guess is that that damn roller near the crack caused it on a rough road or something similar. Should be repairable. Bob.

white with black stripe on trailer looks sharp!

I would have to agree, it appears the crack was caused by the trailer. Since you would be putting in a new transom, floor and maybe repair of some stringers I would not let it bother me. You will have access to the inside and will be able to reinforce this area equal on both sides. Use it as a bargaining point.
