I’m getting ready to repaint my 2004 Tahoe fiberglass boat while I have it out of the water. The gelcoat is faded and has a few small blemishes, so I want to clean it up and give it a fresh, durable finish.
My basic plan:
• Wash and degrease the hull thoroughly
• Sand everything smooth
• Repair any chips or cracks
• Wipe down with solvent
• Mask all hardware and the waterline
• Apply marine-grade primer
• Apply multiple thin coats of polyurethane or gelcoat
• Let everything cure fully before launching
What I need advice on:
• Best primer and paint/gelcoat brands you recommend
• Whether polyurethane or gelcoat gives better long-term results
• Rolling/brushing vs spraying for a home setup
• Any common pitfalls to avoid, especially with prep or curing
Any tips, product suggestions, or photos of similar projects would really help. Thanks in advance.
