Switching Exhaust Tips
Posted this up in General Boating but was getting buried....probably should have put it here in the first place!
Thinking of switching out the original flex hose exhaust tips (with rubber flappers) for some 4" stainless angle tips. How hard is this to do?? The stainless tips mount with screws into the transom...the stock just run right through with the flappers clamped on. I'm new to boats and not very mechanical. Based on the pics below, can anyone tell me what I would need to do and how to do it? The boat has black stainless Silent Choice.
One guy said to carefully work around the flange with a putty knife, being careful not to damage the gel coat, to loosen the current flex hose tip and then twist it off. Then trim to correct length. What IS the correct length??
I guess my question is this (again...sorry if i sound stupid...never been around this stuff before)....Is the flex tube coming out of the transom the same piece that's attached to the end of the silent choice? Or is there a connector of some sort through the transom and it's two pieces? How is water kept out of the transom? Is the flex tube sealed in somehow? Would I use some sort of sealant when installing new tips?
Another guy mentioned a potential issue with alignment. The Silent Choice goes almost all the way to the exhaust cutout in the transom...it's not flex hose.....seems I should be alright there, no????
Appreciate any help. Don't want to buy these tips if it's going to be too complicated for me to do or too costly to have done for me.
Thanks!
Ryan
