Anyone ever seen hydraulic steering with the pump under the dash?

Do u mean a PUMP or a pressure res. ????

They got Hydraulic steerings with no pump ass. only by pressure in a res. !!!!!!

A pump needs to be driven by a belt, unless u have the engine under the dash ,,,i don't think its going to work ??? LOL

Manual hydraulic, the pump is in the helm... err, the pump is your arm strength.

There is also an add in to manual hydraulic that is electric powered. basically a booster like the power steering pump. that could go under the dash, but they are usually in the engine compartment.

Looking at a 28 foot boat neither of the motors have the pump on them ask the guy about it he said that it is under the dash, is that true?

Yes its a non suported power steering,,,,race boats used to have that,,,its a little hard to steer around the dock but ok on the go.

The helm is the pump!!!!!!!

I don't recall ,when they start making them. But a friend of mine had the same steering in his raceboat up to untill he sold it in 2004.
And it worked great, the only thing is ,,,if not on plane its like having no power steering.

Is that just a standard Hyd helm without a pump hooked up? Or is it a special re-geared / ratio'd pump like it would be for a manual car steering rack?

If it's just a regular hyd helm without a pump, how would you plumb the damn thing?

I would imagine it might be dangerous to turn in at speed as the water pressure on the drive might be stronger than the arm pressure holding the wheel so the drive might straighten on you. BUt if it's been used on race boats, you could assume it doesn't... can't you?
Now i'm curious to know how this is plumbed! Got any pics of a power pump-less setup anyone?

It has a pressurized reservoir !!!!!! its easyer then cable steering but tuffer then pump assist steering .
It has a return line and everything like a new Hyd. steering just without the pump ,,therefor u got a press fill valve on the res. where u add air press with a compr. like on a tire and its good to go ,,,u may need to fill press once a year !!!

Raceboats had it back in the days ,,,so i don't think its going to be unsafe at all!!!!!!!!!!!!:ernaehrung004:

I bet u can add a pump aswell and get rit of the reservoir ??!!
