i need help getting a cam for a gen vi 454

i am wanting to upgrade the cam in mt gen 6 454, i want more power and louder pipes of course. the motor is a gen 6 454 that use to be a mpi motor but i bought the long block and i am using a carter 750 carb and 4 barrel dual plane on it along with gil pipes. i would like to avoid new springs BUT i will switch them if i need to. i am not even sure that the existing cam will even work all that well since it is for a efi motor? does anyone have a used one that will work? any recomendations on which one to buy? i have been looking at a few comp cams ones on ebay, roller cams are not cheap! but i would if possible like to put the cam in this year, if not i can do it next spring after the boat is all done and ran for awhile.

We offer a number of new cam applications but I really need to know what your horsepower expectations are and what type of exhaust system you will be using. You can stay with a std hydraulic cam but will have limited horsepower gains limited only by your exhaust system choice. If you would like to discuss in person feel free to give me a call at 386-446-0660.

Best Regards,

Scott

A cam change alone is going to be good for about 30hp or 2mph. You would need new springs.

Crane Cams "731" Cam, but you'd be better off with new springs though.

Search for 731 on this site, you'll get all the info you need

Good choice if he find one right now with Crane being shut down.

i read up on the cam some, i am more confused then ever.... is this going to be a good cam for "my" application? seems like everyone has a different opinion on everything and i dont know what to use... i am not planning to go crazy on this motor but if i can get my top speed up to or above 65 i will be a very happy guy and i think i need a cam to do that?

If you can wait, the cranes will be available soon. I'm working on a stash of 731s and 741s now....

If your in a hurry go with the XM278H cam. This is a good choice to obtain your goals. Plus a cool idle. Go to compcams.com and hit the tech page and then the audio part. Kind of fun this time of year. Gets your **** charged.

I am having Bob RMbuilder do a custom grind. I should be getting any day now. Give him your specs and he can make whatever you are looking for. You will need to change your springs to match your cam. Lifters may not work either for a high lift cam.
