I need help with a 26' Corsa i picked up. First off the boat is / was a race boat. Has a single 502 with a SSM #3 Drive. Seems to have been built with the best available 20+ years back. I know just shy of nothing about this steering system. The system consists of a helm, a pressurized reservoir, a pressure relief valve, and two cylinders.
When I picked up the boat I turned the wheel to the right and it turned the lower. When I turned it to the left it seemed to spin freely and do nothing. now I dont see any place that fluid has been leaking. The fluid level seems to be ok but the pressure gauge on the reservoir only shows 5 lbs. I read on the internet that it should be 35 to 40 psi. Before I add air I figured I would see if that sounds right. Would low air pressure cause it to not function properly? The boat was supposed to have been running and driving less than a year back. Could it just be low pressure? Will it hurt it to put 40 lbs in? Anyone know of any shops on the east coast of Fl that would be familiar with this system? I appreciate any help you guys can give. Ray

what helm do you have? those older style hynautic rams are crappy and the rods bend easily. If you have the small black round helm, it is probably leaking internally. I have some of those rams and other better pumps . you could use a better system.

My understanding is that the boat was traded in at a dealer toward the purchase of a fishing boat. I got it from the dealer. I spoke with the engine builder and he put me in touch with the old owner. He traded it in the beginning of 08' and the boat sat at the dealer till now. He did say that he built the boat 3 or 4 years back to run in a annual race in Fort Meyers, Fl. He ended up never racing it. Just used it sparingly as a Sat night bar hopper. Supposed to be about 600+ HP. Has Merlin heads, CMI exhaust and a bunch of other cool stuff. Boat is solid but the top half could use a good buffing or even paint. Im not sure what I will do with it. For some reason my wife doesn't think that a 26' boat that seats 2 is practical.................Women! Ray

I am dealing with the same system. I have talked to alot of good people on here and SOS and most say the rams are good. I am converting mine to power assist as we speak. If you read my posts on the link above you see what problems I had. Im only converting because I bought a Charlynn helm CHEAP.
I have the old helm (needs rebuilt) and resovior and maybe some lines if you ever need them.
