i had bad tachs do that to me, screwed up the timing real bad....like spit the top ring land out the exhaust
did not find it until i was timing the new motors....or should i say trying to time them. put new tachs in and has run fine for 5 years.
Try disconnecting the trigger for the tach, run the rpms up with the light on and see if it still jumps around.
