IMO unless you plan to make any other performance upgrades to this engine such as head work, exhaust, intake, carb, roller rockers than going to a roller cam set up is going to be a big expense, probably $1200+ and will have little if any gain. Probably only see a couple mph gain. If everything else is going to be left stock than I would just stay with a hydraulic flat tappet cam. Their fine cams and last a long time as long as you break them in properly. Lot of them running out there. Then all you would need to do is rebuild the short block. Probably save ya at least $900 bucks on the cam alone. You would also save money on having new springs set up on your heads. Just saying your going to spend a lot of money for the very little gain you "might" see.

I am going with roller rockers and i already had headers with thru hull. I have been hearing so many different things. I was told that its hard to get the flat tappet broke in because of temp. i just want to build the motor so it will be dependable. If I can get a few more hps in the build then great. Im happy with the performance of the boat the way it was. Just want the motor to hold up.

Have you talked to Bob RMbuilder ? If you have the budget I would definatly get your cam, springs and lifters from him. It will be an awakening for you on how to build a engine. I gained 5 MPH with his setup and I already had a preformance flat tappet with similar duration. It also idles better and is much quicker.

I'd go roller cam. Flat tappet is just too big of a risk of wipeout with todays motor oils. Not to mention the total rebuild needed when wiping one out. Plus breakin is a breeze with a roller cam.

Of up most importance is change the oil cooler and oil lines.. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CLEAN THEM.. It will just ruin your new motor.
