Default 572 bb

hey folks
considering that the gm/merc 572 had been out for while
i dont see a lot of threads regarding this engine
for marinized purposes compared to the 496 mag/ ho version or the 502 and hp 500 the latter 2 being the most popular
we seem to jump to sci models or even larger merc displacements
again in aftermarket we find the 540 more popular than the 572
and i believe that merc uses many aftermarket parts in their larger displacement engines also
is there a REASON FOR THIS cost or otherwise
we all know there is no replacement for displacement
and good steet engine blocks can be marinized
piston to wall clearance
ring gap
correct head work
etc etc
i was curious as to a reason for this
and is a properly marinized 572 a good choice for marine application

Give the folks at Ateco a call, they have several 572 setups.

To do a 572 or bigger you need a tall deck block with 4.375 stroke. Most of the GM engines we all have are standard deck height and can only use a 4.25 stroke, with offset pistons. If you want a 540 you can use any 502 block and throw in a stroker kit. For those of us that started with a 454 you can make that a 489/496. Just depends on your budget, you can make whatever you want.

What Merc engines are 572 ci????

Maybe some of the older SC's ones, but none currently as far as I know.

A key issue with 572's is the rod angle and longevity. 540's don't have as much rod angle.

GM offers a 572 in their performance book but you can put together a LOT better engine for less money if you do a little shopping.
