The back cap on my outdrive has the Zieger hydraulic steering bracket built in with a stud kit holding it on. . I am switching the cap over to another drive and want to remove the studs and put on the other drive. Any tricks on how to remove the studs with out screwing them up? I have seen some stud removal tools but are about $50. Was hoping I could do it without buying the tool.

stud extractor socket is the only way to go. Should be able to get them at any tool supply. Heck I've seen 'em at Harbor Freight and places like Auto Zone.

Heat and a stud removal tool. You may be able to get it out by double-nutting or you may twist off the theaded part of the stud. Either way definitely put a little heat into it, even a couple heat cycles to help break them loose.

Don't heat your drive until you try this. It works on red locktite all the time.
There is a little finesse to using it but it's money well spent. This one actually "uses" the threads rather than destroying them.
It guarantees the ability to reuse the studs if done properly.
Good luck!

And you CAN buy them separately...

I had some studs give me problems a while back, and I went through several inexpensive stud extractors and other attempts. Then I just bit the bullet and bought a Snap-on stud extractor, and out they came.

X2 i have used these myself, even if a stud is sheared off, as long as there are a couple of threads to bite on they will spin them out, plus they work great for re installing and torquing new studs.

Aw hell, just take 2 nuts and try it. If they come out, you saved money. If not, buy the remover.
I've had no problem removing several myself that had the red locktite. Your results may vary.
