It had 280 hours when I bought it. It now has 284 hours on it

So not uncommon to need a "valve job" at those hours.. in my humble opinion. Seems to be the area of most wear for the SBC..in a boat.
I would get as much done as you can if you are going to keep the boat...
You can vacation over at the machine shop .
