why are they so expensive??? am i missing something here??
90% of the stuff sold for boats is way overpriced yet people still pay it so they keep prices high. Anyone that has dealt with manufacturing overseas knows that most the crap they sell actually costs 1/10 of what they sell it for. Things like "billet" gauge rings, cleat trim rings, cup holders, grab bars ,etc cost literally pennies to make overseas yet they get sold here for 20-30-40 dollars a piece.. |
What I've made are the sticks to thread on your cables and a trim bezel for the dash. I made an easy mount out of the original Kiekhaefer cable holders as shown on my link. An easy job for any DIY guy. I did a batch last year and could do another this winter. If you have intrest in the acrylic ones, contact me at [email protected]

ok great guys! glad there is some interest. im not in the "offshore boat part business" but i would be glad to make a few for you guys if it will save you some cash and make me some dough along the way!
ive got the unit design finalized (subject to revision based on feedback and r&d) basically it an all aluminum design. it iwll be robust, simple, and well made. very durable. basically the design will be a single unit fit for use with trim tabs or drives (basically anything using the standard 33c cable). if you want one for twins...just buy two. if trips...buy three....etc....they will be stackable: meaning that a baseplate can be purchased to configure multiple units for different applications or you can install them in seperate single locations where ever you like. they will require a 1/2 inch hole to be drilled for the protrusion of the indicator rod and two smaller opposed holes for the stainless machine screws that sandwich the mounting surface between the baseplate and the unit body. im thinkin that the base price is gnna be about 175-200 dollars. if multiples are needed a price break will be given... i should have the prototype done this week and installed on my boat. i will post pis before and after the install. any suggestions that you guys have are welcome! thanks! |

i have a design schematic...but its not in digital form.....im behind the times i suppose. lol i drafted it the old fashioned way. i will try to ge tthis thing done asap so i can have some pics if the complete and sisassembled piece in various stages of completion.
it is gnna work great i think. the task that this particular instrument performs is so simple i just cant see paying $399+ s&h d for a single drive indicator......then having to buy the cable and actuator on top of that. i guess as some have eluded...the price reflects the willingness to pay. i feel that my design will be much more robust and versitile than existing models....and also much simpler in its design while mantaining a clean visual appearance. it may lack some of the bling factor.....but for half the price i think it will be a good piece that will allow some of my fellow budget boaters to have what they want and will make a few dollars at the same time. win win right? i will get pics asap and if you guys like what ive made for myself i will be glad duplicate it for you and maybe even offer some custom design options if desired. |
