paul,you said it was doing it before the valve springs were replaced,but it sounds like maybe one of the rocker arms is rubbing against a valve cover.i would remove the valve covers and look for any marks from rubbing.usually two rocker arms on each side are clearanced ,if they did not get put back in the right place,they will rub,as rookie mentioned,if you loosen the valve cover bolts,and the sound changes,you have found the problem.

Rockers on cylinders #1 and #8 intake need to be ground.
