Default Merc p/s & waterpumps falling apart

Last year I had a p/s pump seal blow out, replaced with a gm corsica 3.3 liter pump. Just commented on another thread about this. This year, went to replace impellers on my twin 496 mags & the pump shafts on both pumps fell out in my hands! I replaced them both with Hardin Marine stainless units for just over 1/2 price each. Also a good time to install the strainers I had already purchased. The pump housings were extremely grooved on both ends so they needed replaced anyway but falling apart? 600.00 each from merc? p/s pump same thing? 400.00 I think it was from merc? Are they high on drugs or snorting their phantom black paint! some things are just outrageous. After installing strainers I can see whats going through the pumps & I cant see anything that would hog out the ends of the pump like that & I have put 200 miles on the boat since this repair. Just thought I would share some fixes that worked for me
