Cam / intake choise 454..
Today i'm running with twin 454 edelbrock performer plus cam 2162, performer mainfold 2161 and 750cfm weber(edelbrock) carb. running 4600rpm at full trottle. I've bought l-29 vortec heads and thinking of canging intake and cam.. What du you think of performer rpm air gap intake and http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-CL11-236-4/ maybe this cam. Stock exhaust thru hull.. Will this make a differance? My goal is to increase rpm with the same propps and drives to 4800-5000rpm..

Im gonna guess you have the peanut port heads now?
If you install the vortec heads, you will gain probably a full point of compression. This is a good thing. I would ditch the stock exhaust, in favor of some performance manifolds. Being that you have the stock cast bottom end, I'd leave the cam you have in it. Going to more duration, can make more power, but your gonna need to spin the engine faster. That cam you showed, will probably make peak power around 5400 give or take. I wouldnt want to spin the cast stock internals much over 5000. So, I say do the vortec heads, do the exhaust, get a intake that is port matched to the vortec heads, and go boating. You should see a nice jump in power. |

I would go with a single plane intake, more plenum volume which in a bilge is needed. Hot engine compartment air is a lot less dense and requires more cubic ft of air to equal the same amount of oxygen in a cool environment. I did a lot of searching on this topic and that is what I found based on a merc 420 and 500 hp using an 800 cfm carb and large single plane

I would save the money on the manifold upgrades & consider upgrading to hydraulic roller cam vs flat tappet. I didn't see any improvement switching from the performer to air gap manifold.

The L-29 heads aren't a performance head. To get much out of them you will need to send them to a knowledgeable porter. Your peanuts can probably be ported to flow just as well for the same porting dollars. Besides, the L-29 heads will still require an adjustable stud kit if you put in an aftermarket cam.
Comparing your oval port Performer intake to an oval port AirGap Performer RPM intake - not worth the dollars to swap. If you have the budget, get some better heads. mc |
