I have an HP 500 EFI with a Bravo 1 drive. Recently the boat alarm went off due to overheating (I was at idle speed) I immediately turned the boat off. I checked the impeller and found the impeller in pieces. I was able to retrieve all the impeller pieces from the engine. I replaced the impeller and the housing. I took the boat for a ride and the boat ran fine, the temp was at normal temp range of 150 at 70 MPH. The following week I took the boat out and the impeller and the impeller housing blew into pieces. The boat was at idle speed when this happened. The same thing happened three years ago. The hoses are in good shape. Any clues on what to look for?

My guess....Over tightened the bolts when impeller was reinstalled, thus cracking the plastic housing, and then gernading on it self??

I can assure you it wasn't over tightned. 3 years ago when it happened the first time, the impeller and housing was replaced by someone else.

Possibly a blockage in the hose between the drive and pump, or loose hose clamps allowing air in and the pump to run dry. Was there sea weed wrapped around the drive cutting off the water supply? The pump must be running dry and destroying the impeller.

There was no seaweed and the hose is in good shape. I never thought about a loose clamp. I am wondering if the hose in the drive is collapsing cutting off the water supply. I'm also wondering if the pulley on the pump could be bad.

Pulley & bearings usually make a huge mess if bad!!

What did the inside of the new housing look like before you put it on? The housings I've purchased had so much flashing that they would chew up an impeller in no time. I have always cleaned and ported every housing. I got tired of having to buy new housings every year so I went stainless last year.

Yea , so did i brother and there was a defect inside of the stainless casting on mine . The result , pumped less volume and pressure than the stock plastic pump . I wanted a new pump to try but my money was refunded instead and i was told there was nothing wrong with the pump i had . The advertiser here promised me a new pump about 3 months ago but it never happened . I'm just waiting to see how long this will go before . I still have two nice polished stainless inlet outlet fittings sitting here doing nothing . Needless to say i'm not very happy.... Wondering if anybody else had this problem or is it just my luck .

The stainless steel "lifetime" sea pump overhaul kit from Cp Performance looks like a real nice piece. I was looking at it last winter when I replaced my empeller but at $190.00 it was out of my price range because I was also finishing up a new motor. I will more than likely go that route in the future though. I really like the stainless steel sea pump body and it looks like a real clean piece.
