Dyno results

She ran like a champ today, starts right up, idles great, sounds great, runs like a sowing machine.
Beautiful consistent A/F ratio.

All my mods this winter were geared towards reliability not power so I`m happy with the results.
She was quite Anemic last year with no midrange punch whatsoever and constant battle to keep clean up the A/F ratio along with only getting to 5200rpm.
I was one boat ride away from disaster with several valve hanging up, worn out valve guides , oiling issues..and quite the mess of mismatched components especially in the valve train.
The springs in the heads were good springs, just too light on spring pressure. The Hi-RPM Race morels called for 200-225psi on the seat, and 500-575 open. The springs used were around 155psi on the seat. The Hi-RPM version of these lifters are valved for the extra spring pressure. Bob and my head guy, spec'd a new spring, that not only gave us the correct pressures, but also fit the installed height, and proper distance from coil bind, to help eliminate any spring surging. I`m also switching from straight 50weight to synthetic 15W-50.

My guy @ High Flow Heads did a fantastic job with the combustion chambers and together with Bob M. they came up with an excellent valve train package. Isky tool room springs, marine endurance Scorpion rockers.. New .135 wall pushrods, .. lengths determined by the mid lift method. Replaced the tired MSD distributors and old ignition boxes, with new distributors and Crane marine boxes, and crane LX92 coil to replace the MSD blaster coil. Replaced the arp head bolts with ARP head studs. Installed valve spring oilers. Replaced leaking K&N with Teague Tall breathers (no more leaks) replaced short exhaust rocker studs with correct length etc etc..

Then my boy Mild Thunder got all BoB M. Jr. on me and we went crazy on making sure we had the best valve train geometry possible. (Budman IV was our inspiration :D)

Today the 3 amigos (Mike Tic Tac, Mild, and myself) spent some time playing around but in the end ended up exactly with the same set up as I brought her in.. same pulleys, same jets. That gave us the most power and a smooth 900 rpm idle.

540CI
JE pistons
7:9 Compression
Dart 345 Iron eagle heads
Isky tool Room springs
Morel Hi-RPM hyd roller lifters
Crane 244/256 .632/.632 114LSA cams

With the current pulley combo, I am 3 percent underdriven. With that pulley combo with the old 871's, I got about 4psi of boost. The new to me blowers got new bearings and seals, but the stripping was still in spec per Dyers when they inspected them.

interesting side note.. the intake air temperature gauge only showed a max of 135* under boost (under the blower) it would actually drop from a heat soaked 150* when the motor went WOT. Will be further interesting to see the temps in the boat.

They call for a .750 reach plug, and heads had .460 reach plugs in them.

Proper length rocker studs and bellhousing dowels.

No spring locators were causing the springs to eat away at the valve seals.

We replaced the comp cams fixed guideplates, with dart adjustable guide plates, as the roller tips of the rockers were half off the valves.

thank you.

Good deal that you got everything worked out & your happy with the results, should make for some trouble free fun boating. How about some video when you get on the water? Randy

airjunky 03-20-2014 12:24 AM

Looking to do something similar this summer , single engine dual tanks and thought about a mechanical fuel pump to keep it simple , what pump is that and did you run it on your dyno session ?

Not bad for a steel headed motor. Not trying to bash but man you go through alot of women...

MER Performance 03-20-2014 10:36 AM

Looks like you have all straightened out, those were a lot of issues that can lead to destruction. Valve train past problems resolved; Madara, is the guy to straighten you out on that issue.
