I polished my aluminum trailer and it has kept a decent shine for 2+ years. Just wash a few times a season.
Sanding is the critical first step followed by careful polishing with an airway pad. I used products from this company:

Muriatic Acid will not make aluminum shine. It will lightly etch it and make it look more "silvery." Worse yet, it will attack the plating on all of the fasteners on the trailer leading to them corroding not too far down the road. As ugly as lightly oxidized / unfinished aluminum looks, it's a hell of a lot easier to take care of than it will be after you polish it. As another poster already stated, every drop of water will stain it.

This is some of the best metal polish I have found. I have polished quite a few snowmobile tunnels and diamond plate truck parts by hand with it in short periods of time. Works even better with power buffer. I was a a truck show and bought some from their booth a while back to try it. I was very impressed. Ive tried them all but this stood out. Busch's comes in second best. The shine lasts a long time because it has a sealer in it. I only had to touch up my snowmobiles once a year to keep the shine even after tons of road salt and trail grime. I need to order more myself.
