260 Mercruiser electric fuel pump conversion
So I tried taking out my boat yesterday and had a hell of a time starting it...finally got her running. Then out onto the River, get her on plane and she dies, just like ignition shut off. Get her restarted, then down to my cousin's house. I wait of him to load up his boat, it dies again. I couldn't get her going, so had to get towed it....what a bummer!
So I pull the dipstick and smell fuel. I remove the oil filler in the valve cover....WOW it's bad!! So instead of buying another mechanical pump, I'm going electric.
I'd like any and all input from those who have done so. I know how to wire in the relay and the oil pressure switch also. I was wondering how you guys mounted the pump and plumbed it.

You need to do a fuel pressure test 1st before parts changing as IMO you need a complete carb overhaul You are looking for a fuel pressure of 4 psi min thru 7 psi for most stock marine carb engines. Also if your mech. fuel pump is original I would change it out as well regardless. You might be very surprised what it looks like internally. Complete junked up and almost like sand material (aluminum oxide) pouring out of them is what we see with most of them today. I would not rule out new fuel filter(s) and a complete carb job on top of.

Get another mecjanical pump. More relaible and obviously much easier to replace. than to choose and rig in an electric one.
Absolutely no reason to run electric unless you have no other choice.

Mercruiser, or Carter or Sierra aftermarket marine parts. Of course I sell 2 out of the 3 but most people go online and look for the cheapest price and buy that. Very hard to sell marine parts these days to compete with their online pricing.
You also need to check your carb out as well, Possible needle & seat issue or a float problem if you are dumping a lot a lot gas to smell it in the crank case. Not good to wash down the cylinder walls with fuel. Good luck.

I haven't had a chance to tear into it. From my automotive experience, this is coming from a ruptured bladder in the pump as previously stated. I will grab a new water separator and fuel filter also.
I found this Carter pump at Summit Racing.....

This has the barb to connect to the carb like my Rochester carb needs.
I plan on tearing into the carb also. I will just grab a rebuild kit and go from there.

has the vent for marine use. the only time you convert to elec fuel pump is if you get a block with no fuel pump boss. that pump lasted you 20 years plus. don't go redesigning it cuz you expect 30...
