Default building a 383

i want to build a 383 using a 2001 sbc block and keep my mpi set up any one have good onfo on what crank , rods ,cam to use . i have the mpi set up with ecm555

go to summit racing website,they have all kinds of 383 rotating assembly,s.

383's make awesome torque. That was one of my first builds for my z28 in high school. I used 400 crank and rods with flat top pistons and small chambered (double hump) heads. I polished/radius the beams and had them shot peened and magnafluxed the rods. This was back in 85 and nowadays old school however made a great engine. The cam I used was the sbc comp 292 magnum cam adv 4 deg (king of the drive in).

Like mike said there are a bunch of rotating assemblies out there on the market. I would send to a machine shop to have balanced regardless. Are you dead set on the MPi? Personally I'd ditch that. Just my opinion though.

yes i am dead set on mpi set up i ve gotten enough problems with carbs our boating season is short here in canada and carbs tend to foul up durng winter even if winterized

There are only a few people that can program those ECU's. So consult them on engine packages first. IE; compression, camshafts, heads or head work, exhaust and etc. This is paramount !

The 555 controller is going to be your Achilles heel.

I would focus on good parts and assembly AFTER you find someone to tune the 555. If it were a MEFI 1 thru 4 you'd have lots of options. Scat, Eagle, Crower etc all offer stroker kits for the SBC.

I would focus last on exhaust unless you went really big on the cam and needed to control reversion (and I'm assuming you have thru hull exhaust).

My last 383 I used a rotating assembly from CNC Motorsports, Eagle 4340 crank, 6" h beam rods, mahle 4032 pistons, rings, came with the Hines balanced card. Nice parts and I ran the crappie out of it. The 555 ECM is going to make it tough to tune correctly. Whipple can make a tune but will cost you a few grand when you are finished. You need to supply him a/f ratio numbers, map, rpm.

Just to echo what Ryan mentioned I've been running an Eagle stoker kit for about 5 years with no issue. Same forged crank, 6" H beams, but SRP pistons and a Crowder valve train assembly (cam, lifters, rockers etc.).

did some research some kits come with 5.7 rods and others come with 6" rods . also many offer externally balanced or internnaly balanced in other words some kits come with harmonic balancer and flex plate others don t . i know that all sdc 86+ engines use a flywheel with a weight on it . if i want to use a 2001 block and my stock harmonic balancer and stock merc flywheel which crank should i use

ext and int balance don't mean comes with flywheel. it means what type flywheel, balancer you need to run. and, either way, for what you are gonna do with that motor, balancing the rotating assy with flywheel and balancer is a good idea.
