Default XR Instal Getting Shift Cable Attached

First time I have removed an XR drive myself. Over the weekend the shift cable end came out of the 2 piece shift linkage in the drive. Cable end is not damaged, still a nice barrel shape. My problem is I cannot get the cable to clip into the shift linkage as I slide the drive into place. It doesnt seem the barrel end sits in the linkage. Is there a trick Im missing here? PM me Im working on it now. Thanks, Rob

Shifter in neutral, pull out the clasp assembly on the drive with needle nose pliers is how I do it. Can take a pretty good tug.

I have that all done. Doing the install now, does the cable end snap into the linkage does it just rest inthere? There are slots in the linkage I assume where the cable rests. When this is done right does the barrel lay in the linkage and the cable rests in the slot and the hasp holds everything in place?

Got it solved. Looks like the cable was replaced by previous owner. It never really seated in the drive shift linkage. Used a small die grinder to clean up the cable end so it seats and the cable now sits in its guide. Life is back to normal.

At least I finally made an outdrive stand, now I'll need to make another for this winter.
